I want my stuff back.

You're not going to get it back. Even if you catch her stealing a new item she'll say she doesn't have the older items. You need to mentally let it go, and just fire her.

when our first house cleaner stole from us my husband called and her and said if she didn't bring all the money back we'd call the police. She had 20 minutes.
She brought all the money back.

Put not obvious cameras in the areas inside. Or, just fire her and hire someone else. I would make sure you are paying them well if you have this much valuable stuff around!

I was convinced my MIL took some of my makeup/skincare products that went missing which she said she liked - it was the only explanation that made sense (it happened while they were staying with us). Well I found them months later after doing an extensive search and they were in a bag that my MIL must have put them in with some other random stuff. Fortunately I never even mentioned it to her - just make 100% certain it wasn’t misplaced before accusing them.

Nanny here - I’ve had so many families contact me about their ‘missing’ items, only for them to turn up days, weeks, months later. It’s so stressful and upsetting. My current employer made a big show during the hurricane about her ‘missing’ lanterns and made me feel like she thought I took them??? Well the kids and I found them after searching for 10 minutes in the house. Yes this is a very specific post, so if my boss is reading, no I don’t take any of your things!!!! Maybe if these wealthy people didn’t have so much stuff, they could keep track of it better. Also, why would I want your emergency lanterns???

My mother told a story for years about how her silver pencil (antique, made of silver, lead fillers) went missing when we moved from the UK to the US. She literally blamed "the movers" like some kind of OCD fixation. Then about 5 years later she got an old jacket out of the closet and put her hand in the pocket to find - THE F-KING SILVER PENCIL

no remorse though, for blaming innocent people

I'm going to search again but... I do keep very good track of my clothing. That's how I know they're gone. And I had just organized my closet.
But, I'll look again.

In my whole life I’ve never known of a housecleaner who actually stole anything.

It makes no sense. The whole business is built on trust and reputation.

BUT, more than one of my least favorite people have said that they think their housecleaner is stealing from them.

So my money is on OP misplacing things, her kids stealing them, or something else like that. Why would the housecleaner take this stuff? It makes no sense.

Nanny here - Thank you! This causes so much stress and anxiety. I would never steal from a job, because 1) it’s wrong! and 2) I’d get fired and lose a reference.

I personally only hire cleaning companies who are bonded and insured. I ask for their insurance company’s contact information and let them know during the interview that I have filed claims in the past. I also tell them that we have cameras and that I have a zero-tolerance policy towards stealing.

I would never hire an individual to clean. Too much paperwork with taxes and too much risk.

There’s no tax paperwork for housecleaners if they’re weekly or biweekly. It’s well established that they’re independent contractors.

except that it actually happened to us before.
My kids haven't been in my house for months and wouldn't steal.
I hope I misplaced them and that they turn up.

I was convinced my cleaning lady stole a diamond stud earring. My boyfriend insisted she wouldn’t since the other one was on the bureau and would be an incomplete set. I said fine, exasperated with him, “maybe it fell on the rug and she vacuumed it. Do you want me to empty the vacuum bag to prove it to you?” It was in the vacuum bag.

She’s probably out there living it up in her white dry fit shirt and used dress.
