Shrubbery and curb appeal are concerns from elementary school parents who haven't a clue. |
No axe to grind just the truth. Building is depressing, minimal extracurriculars, small cohort of kids all in the same class, very limited electives, etc…. No one would choose above as their top choice. They are choosing cooper because they did not luck out in the lottery with their top choices. |
| You obviously has no first hand info on Latin Cooper, the electives, or school environment. It is an absolutely lovely campus that in one year has inspired a love of learning, academic discussions, and community for my kid. The current building may not be great, but it is a mistake to underestimate the fantastic group of kids, teachers, and administrators. |
"Absolutely lovely campus"?

22:46 poster above. No kids at school but have heard from families who do. Please enlighten us as to what is false about my statement below. “No axe to grind just the truth. Building is depressing, minimal extracurriculars, small cohort of kids all in the same class, very limited electives, etc…. No one would choose above as their top choice. They are choosing cooper because they did not luck out in the lottery with their top choices.” Lastly, we all know you did not rank Cooper as your top choice in the lottery. |
| Latin Cooper didn’t have to be first choice to be a good choice. Parents/caregivers get 12 choices for MySchool lottery. Sometimes the first choice in a reputable renovated building ends up being not the best choice. The school will get better as it grows and people will become ok not getting in 2nd Street Latin. Growing pains. |
Looks like a former warehouse. |
| Are you going to show pics of inside the building? |
Why is the banner in large Spanish? It’s Latin kids have to take and Spanish is not the language of choice. Odd. Not a lot Hispanics that I know of around school either. Must be desperate in trying to attract ESL families. |
The English version of the banner is hanging on the far side of the entrance. |
| A lot of people rank Cooper 2 after the original Latin campus 1. It is very hard to get into either Latin. |
| Ludlow-Taylor had over expected re-enrollment for 5th grade and has had to add a 3rd class. Anyone last minute looking for a 5th grade spot, I imagine they’ll take quite a few more of the waitlist during that first week of school to fill those classes out. |
|
We are on waitlists a bunch of places in NE for 1st grade and it seems like they are just not moving at all compared to past years? Two examples:
Ludlow Taylor had a waitlist of 37 for 1st grade last year, and made 17 offers by August (no additional offers by count day). This year they had a waitlist of 41 and have made 7 offers so far. Granted, this looks a bit more like prior years so maybe last year was just an outlier for them. But Inspired Teaching had a waitlist of 50 for 1st grade last year, and made 35 offers by August (40 by count day). The previous year they had a waitlist of 85 and made 17 offers by August (60 by count day). This year they have a waitlist of 52 and have made no offers. And here's one I really don't get: Lee Brookland last year had a waitlist of 55 for 1st grade, and made 6 offers by August (39 by count day). The previous year they had a waitlist of 61 and made 38 offers by August (52 by count day). This year they have a waitlist of 46 and have made one offer. Is it likely that ITS and Lee will make a bunch of September offers to fill a handful of seats? Why is it structured this way? I hate the idea of having to move my kid in September after school starts but it seems like these schools haven't moved their waitlists all summer and surely there is just some normal attrition that happens. Plus Lee has had such a tumultuous few years I find it really surprising they haven't made a single waitlist offer for 1st, which I thought was when a lot of parents abandon Montessori? I don't get it. |
A few points: The offer data is as of early August so it's pretty out of date at this point. There tends to be a lot of offers in late August generally. I think waitlist length, but also waitlist movement, is less this year system-wide. Except at a few schools that are experiencing issues causing people to leave and decline offers. I think that Lee is not having as many Primary (1st-3rd) classrooms this year as it has in the past. Lee parents, can you confirm? That would definitely explain it. ITS tends to move its list really late in the summer. At ITS it just depends on who leaves, moves away, etc., so there can be a lot of variation across grades and years with no real reason for it. Can we help you to find a school? It looks like Seaton has a short waitlist for 1st. https://www.myschooldc.org/short-waitlists |

To some degree, schools also need to start classes and see who shows up (or doesn't) before they really know how many seats they have.
ITDS started yesterday. They will likely know who's definitely not showing up within a few days and begin to make some offers based on that. It won't be a ton, but the waitlist could move more (or less) depending on whether people are willing to join a week into the school year. Lee starts late - after Labor Day. That timing will affect when and how they move the waitlist. |
