We are on waitlists a bunch of places in NE for 1st grade and it seems like they are just not moving at all compared to past years? Two examples: Ludlow Taylor had a waitlist of 37 for 1st grade last year, and made 17 offers by August (no additional offers by count day). This year they had a waitlist of 41 and have made 7 offers so far. Granted, this looks a bit more like prior years so maybe last year was just an outlier for them. But Inspired Teaching had a waitlist of 50 for 1st grade last year, and made 35 offers by August (40 by count day). The previous year they had a waitlist of 85 and made 17 offers by August (60 by count day). This year they have a waitlist of 52 and have made no offers. And here's one I really don't get: Lee Brookland last year had a waitlist of 55 for 1st grade, and made 6 offers by August (39 by count day). The previous year they had a waitlist of 61 and made 38 offers by August (52 by count day). This year they have a waitlist of 46 and have made one offer. Is it likely that ITS and Lee will make a bunch of September offers to fill a handful of seats? Why is it structured this way? I hate the idea of having to move my kid in September after school starts but it seems like these schools haven't moved their waitlists all summer and surely there is just some normal attrition that happens. Plus Lee has had such a tumultuous few years I find it really surprising they haven't made a single waitlist offer for 1st, which I thought was when a lot of parents abandon Montessori? I don't get it.
A few points: The offer data is as of early August so it's pretty out of date at this point. There tends to be a lot of offers in late August generally. I think waitlist length, but also waitlist movement, is less this year system-wide. Except at a few schools that are experiencing issues causing people to leave and decline offers. I think that Lee is not having as many Primary (1st-3rd) classrooms this year as it has in the past. Lee parents, can you confirm? That would definitely explain it. ITS tends to move its list really late in the summer. At ITS it just depends on who leaves, moves away, etc., so there can be a lot of variation across grades and years with no real reason for it. Can we help you to find a school? It looks like Seaton has a short waitlist for 1st. https://www.myschooldc.org/short-waitlists
