Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appears poised to suspend another prosecutor from office, this time zeroing in on how a central Florida state attorney dealt with the 19-year-old man accused of killing three people in Orlando, including a television reporter.

DeSantis has already publicly criticized State Attorney Monique Worrell’s handling of previous prosecutions of the suspect, Keith Moses, who had a record of arrests as a juvenile and was on probation at the time he allegedly went on a shooting spree.

On Tuesday, DeSantis’ general counsel demanded that Worrell turn over emails, reports and documents related to Moses, including his juvenile record.

Authorities charged Moses with killing three people last week, including 24-year-old television reporter Dylan Lyons and a nine-year-old girl. He’s also been charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting two other people.

DeSantis’ general counsel Ryan Newman, in his letter to Worrell, questioned how Moses was allowed to “remain on the streets after multiple arrests, including one your office has refused to prosecute.” Moses was arrested last November for possession of marijuana, but authorities said his juvenile arrest record includes more serious charges.

“The failure of your office to hold this individual accountable for his actions — despite his extensive criminal history and gang affiliation — may have permitted this dangerous individual to remain on the street,” wrote Newman. “Clearly, Mr. Moses should have never been in a position to commit those senseless crimes of last week.”

Newman added that “as we seek to learn valuable lessons from this heartbreaking event, we must determine if Mr. Moses was enabled by gaps in our sentencing laws that must be corrected, or, to be frank, your office’s failure to properly administer justice.”

Oh, and this....

"Florida’s Constitution gives the governor the power to suspend elected officials for various reasons, including neglect of duty and malfeasance or commission of a felony."

And, he has laid out succinctly in the EO how she has neglected her duty.

Exactly. Crime in Florida will continue to plummet even faster now. It’s already at a 50 year low (FBI).

Go Florida!!!!! Dems can suck it.

I can promise you it's not only "MAGAs" (your words) who are upset and frustrated with the relaxation of consequences for violent, repeat criminals.

Oh look, one of the brainless MAGAs I was talking about.

It isn't the role of the governor to overturn the will of the voters because his state attorney isn't doing what he wants. This is something that separates us from banana republics run by tin-pot dictators. But apparently, neither DeSantis nor his defenders care. There's no depths they won't plumb as long as some libs somewhere are being owned.

My word, you're stupid. Try reading the Florida Constitution, you nitwit. -DP
https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/ExecutiveSuspensions/2024

Executive Suspensions
The Suspension Process
Article IV, section 7(a), of the State Constitution authorizes the Governor to suspend any state officer not subject to impeachment or any county officer on any of the following grounds: malfeasance, misfeasance, neglect of duty, drunkenness, incompetence, permanent inability to perform official duties, or commission of a felony.

The Florida Senate has the exclusive responsibility to sit in judgment of the merits of a suspension. The Senate may remove from office or reinstate the suspended official. Senate Rule 12 outlines the process adopted by the Senate.

She doesn't sound like a State Attorney. She sounds like a defense attorney. If she wants to defend criminals, she should go into that line of work.
I applaud DeSantis for doing this. Other State Attorneys better be on notice.... do your job, enforce the law, and prosecute crimes.

He removed the Democrat who was elected and replaced her with her Federalist Society opponent who lost the election. I don’t give a shit what his executive order says. There was no due process. There was no independent, transparent investigation. All of that should be required to remove an elected official from office.

This is just a partisan fascist Governor doing a partisan fascist action in a partisan fascist way.

Throw more tantrums. You clearly refuse to read the actual LAW permitting DeSantis to do this. No doubt other states have similar laws on their books. Try educating yourself instead of just stomping your feet when you don't get your way.

Exactly. The morons calling this "fascism" would clearly prefer violent criminals like Moses be released, over and over again. Democrats are sick.

Address the fact that this judge refused to prosecute violent criminals - if you can, that is. We'll wait.

It may be legal in Florida because of its dumbass legislature, but it’s still fascism. Jim Crow was legal, but still fascism. Everything Desantis does or says is bad-faith partisanship. That’s the image he has intentionally cultivated.

FBI database is wrong - and not only wrong, but VERY wrong, for the severe incompleteness reasons laid out here - https://www.themarshallproject.org/2023/06/20/desantis-florida-crime-rate-incomplete-data

Why can’t you cite any examples of what she has/hasn’t done? You said the executive order was so clear on the matter but you pivoted to quoting the law. You can’t show how she’s violated any of those different crimes.

Then one of you turbo geniuses called her a judge.

This thread is about DeSantis and Worrell. You really need to work on your basic reading comprehension, dear.

+100
I can't stand Trump and I absolutely cheer this action. It needs to be repeated across the country. People like the PP, who label everyone they disagree with as "MAGA" are truly the idiots among us.

Really think about this. You REALLY believe it is a good idea to remove elected officials and replace them with the losing side? Why even have elections? Just let Governors and the government decide who gets in where.

We have a process for these things and this is not it. We have to be able to separate agreeing with the idea and the actual execution of it.
This is a really dangerous path to take.

I agree and I'm glad to see her go, but I'm concerned that both sides have delved even deeper into partisan politics.

There is NO both sides here. She was duly elected. Her constituents should hold her accountable. I only see politics on one side! If the tables were turned and the Dems removed an R, holy war would break out.
