Governor Ron DeSantis Suspends State Attorney Monique Worrell for Neglect of Duty and Incompetence

This is not a surprise. From March:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appears poised to suspend another prosecutor from office, this time zeroing in on how a central Florida state attorney dealt with the 19-year-old man accused of killing three people in Orlando, including a television reporter.

DeSantis has already publicly criticized State Attorney Monique Worrell’s handling of previous prosecutions of the suspect, Keith Moses, who had a record of arrests as a juvenile and was on probation at the time he allegedly went on a shooting spree.

On Tuesday, DeSantis’ general counsel demanded that Worrell turn over emails, reports and documents related to Moses, including his juvenile record.

Authorities charged Moses with killing three people last week, including 24-year-old television reporter Dylan Lyons and a nine-year-old girl. He’s also been charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting two other people.

DeSantis’ general counsel Ryan Newman, in his letter to Worrell, questioned how Moses was allowed to “remain on the streets after multiple arrests, including one your office has refused to prosecute.” Moses was arrested last November for possession of marijuana, but authorities said his juvenile arrest record includes more serious charges.

“The failure of your office to hold this individual accountable for his actions — despite his extensive criminal history and gang affiliation — may have permitted this dangerous individual to remain on the street,” wrote Newman. “Clearly, Mr. Moses should have never been in a position to commit those senseless crimes of last week.”

Newman added that “as we seek to learn valuable lessons from this heartbreaking event, we must determine if Mr. Moses was enabled by gaps in our sentencing laws that must be corrected, or, to be frank, your office’s failure to properly administer justice.”

"Florida’s Constitution gives the governor the power to suspend elected officials for various reasons, including neglect of duty and malfeasance or commission of a felony."

And, he has laid out succinctly in the EO how she has neglected her duty.

Moses' juvenile arrests happened in 2018 and 2019 before Worrell was the State's Attorney.

But you're right, it's not a surprise DeSantis did this to the only black female State's Attorney. Good way to deflect people from talking about what a failure he is as a Presidential candidate.

Desantis deserves ZERO benefit of the doubt. He has billed himself as a hyper partisan a**hole so we are all justified in believing that this is just a hyper partisan a**hole action to try to save his failing campaign. It is not about crime or the law. It’s just removing a Black woman from office to appeal to the Republican base. Remember this guy promised to “slit throats” on Day One, referring to firing “woke” federal employees (racist euphemism for too many Black women).

She doesn't sound like a State Attorney. She sounds like a defense attorney. If she wants to defend criminals, she should go into that line of work.
I applaud DeSantis for doing this. Other State Attorneys better be on notice.... do your job, enforce the law, and prosecute crimes.

I agree and I'm glad to see her go, but I'm concerned that both sides have delved even deeper into partisan politics.

It isn't the role of the governor to overturn the will of the voters because his state attorney isn't doing what he wants. This is something that separates us from banana republics run by tin-pot dictators. But apparently, neither DeSantis nor his defenders care. DP. I refer you to this: "The Governor has the authority to suspend a state officer under Article IV, Section 7 of the Florida Constitution." DeSantis is fully within his gubernatorial rights and duties here. He has done nothing illegal or even questionable.
