How about just plain "Ann" or "Anne"
You can always call her Annie as a nickname. |
Read the thread, OP doesn't want to call her Anne. |
The two Annies I know are both actually named Anna. Not sure how that came about as one is no shorter than the other. |
You should probably just pick a name you actually like. That is especially true here because Annie isn't a nickname that ages especially well in your daughter's 30s and 40s. |
I grew up with an Annelise and this was never an issue. |
I know three people named Annie and they are all actually named Anne. Annie is a nickname for Anne. It is NOT a nickname for ANY of the names that people have recommended.
Annelise will be nn Elise Andrea will be nn Andy Anais sounds absolutely nothing like Annie Annabelle will be Belle or maaaaybe Anna Annaleigh is a stupid name Etc. Name your kid Anne or Annie. I don't know why you hate the name Anne, but you need to get over it, weirdo. |
I am in my mid 40s and know three people that go by Annie that are my age or older. |
Two of them in a professional setting. |

2 of the 3 Annies I knew ditched it before going to college. It is almost just like Bobby. There will be a few (RFK and athletes in particular) but most decide to ditch it for Rob, Robert, or Bob once they hit adulthood. |
Weird, the Annie I knew in college was Leanna. It’s almost as though your experience isn’t universal. |
I know several people with longer names who go by Annie with family and close friends. Including an Annabel and an Anika. "First syllable+y sound" is maybe the most classic nickname format in the English language? I know people who don't like nicknames with that pattern and went out of their way to find names that couldn't be shortened this way to avoid it, because it's so common. So it's weird to argue that OP can't give her kid a longer name that starts with "An" and call her Annie. It sounds totally normal to me. |
+1 My SIL moved away from Annie prior to med school basically because she wanted to come across as more professional. Only her mom calls her Annie 10 years later. Asking her about it, she liked Annie growing up but the switch was a pain with multiple friend groups. I also had a college roommate who went by Bobby until college! It is similar. Certain names sound like kids names to me (some -ie and -y names stand out) . I think little orphan Annie doesn't help with this particular name either. |
