What do you want in a beach rental?

I have used the desk to work at a few rental houses, now that you mention it.

Opposite here, I will only book a rental if it is no pets allowed. Pet friendly rentals are never cleaned thoroughly enough to prevent DCs allergies.

The amount of people who have dogs v the amount of people allergic to dogs is very lopsided. I don’t think OP will miss your booking.

I would think this is a personal preference to the OP. I prefer rentals where pets are not allowed. IME most rentals don’t allow pets but I know people who travel with pets like the few places that do allow pets.

Oh yes this. I don't understand rental houses that have no way to block the morning sun.

Totally agree on this.

THIS. It’s very important to me.

I don’t rent homes that allow dogs, even though I have a dog. Especially at the beach. You know that inconsiderate jerks let their wet dog lay on the couch. Gross. Nope nope nope.

I’m the PP that allows dogs in our rental. We charge a $100 pet fee. In 3 years we’ve had 2 pee incidents. One on a bath mat that we immediately threw out and replaced and one on the laminate floor that was easy to clean.
Again this is a very personal decision. We found we got more off season rentals once we allowed dogs. Summer months probably wouldn’t make a difference.

You're in denial or naiive if you think there's only ever been 2 per accidents in your rental.

Blackout curtains!! Beach rentals all have the gauzy white curtains that don't block any of the sun that comes up super early in the summer and I can't sleep through it.

I have one of those expandable clothes lined in the garage that people can use for beach towels and suits. Does that work?

Totally second the curtains. Also recommend no bunk beds, but yes to twin beds. A lot of places have bunk beds, but you often need space for adults and I’m not climbing up an ikea ladder.

I also love a stick vacuum or Dustbuster, and a real broom/dustpan. And a first aid kit and scissors in a kitchen drawer. Laminated instructions for anything complex-remote controlled fan, hvac, laundry, etc. and right next to it.

Finally, I always find it nice when there’s a clean washable cotton blanket near the sofa/porch. Nothing fancy, but it makes a place seem cozy.

Based on my last beach rental: working appliances.

It really sucks when the oven doesn’t work properly.

I love a guest book. Always write and thank you and fun to read other vacationer’s comments.

+1

Wil never rent a pet friendly place because you know it will smell like a dog and be gross. I guess if we had a dog we may feel differently.

And both are probably outnumbered by people like us who like dogs, maybe even have dogs (I do) and don't bring them to the beach and prefer a place without dog hair even if (like me) it's just a break and they are going back home to their own dog hair infested house.

Thanks. I am updating decor which isn’t super beachy but it is dated “cottage” look. And will add some comfort items like the throw. And I am also trying to figure out the best signage, and where to locate it. I saw something online that creates a QR code to provide wifi network and password. That looked helpful to have near the TV.

Question for experienced owners: how much of the stuff mentioned here walks away between renters? I know that I love an airbnb with new-to-the-kids toys and all of the nice things mentioned here, but I also know that we have inadvertently taken things from hotels/airbnbs. And we are very honest people.
