Not OP, but they give out used chromebooks. The one they gave DS was already in bad shape. Maybe OP meant new as in a different new-to-him chromebook. |
If that's your measure, we're still in the Plague era, the Smallpox era, the Polio era, etc. Like those others, we're out of the Covid Emergency era, though. |
| just pay it. FFS |
What a stupid response. Did you not read that they can not do this? I wouldn't tolerate this for 2 seconds and would be in the supers office. My kid with sns has to have a computer to work and the first one they gave him had visible damage and would take 15 minutes 2 start and died regularly. I walked it back to the office and he had a new functioning one the next day. |
| In VA it's illegal to withhold a diploma because of unpaid fees. I've had two teachers attempt to charge me for textbooks that are required for the class. And same thing for calculators. I'm surprised they try to get away with this stuff in public schools. |
What does this mean? Our school recently sent out a list of charges for missing keys, damage to screen, Chromebook not working, etc. MCPS must still be charging. Otherwise where would our school administration have gotten this list? |
The charge is more than the replacement value of the item. Students at our school are required to use these Chromebooks. They may not bring in outside devices. |
| I might have missed it but have you called the principal? Or the school counselor? |
Is MCPS in VA, I thought we were in MD? |
They got the list because it used to be the policy. It’s no longer the policy. They’re doing things the old/wrong way. |
OP should have done that. |
I'm surprised you're cool with absolutely no accountability to public funds. I'll keep this in mind during the next hand-wringing thread about giving schools more money for student items. |
| Our HS wasn't charging until last month. |
I'm surprised you're cool with schools stealing from children. |

Example from Stonegate:
https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/stonegatees/news-index/2020/september/mcps-chromebook-policy ---- MCPS CHROMEBOOK POLICY - UPDATED 2022 Chromebook Damage Financial Responsibility Information If your Chromebook is lost or broken, you will incur an obligation ranging from $25 (for a lost/broken charger or minor damage) to $150 for a loss or total replacement needed. You will need to pay online and bring your receipt to Stonegate's main office to get a replacement, or make arrangements to pay in cash at MCPS’s office at 45 West Gude Drive. ---- Another: https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/snowdenfarmes/news-index/chromebook-policy-and-repair-information/ ---- Physical damage (intentional or accidental) to a device will result in a financial obligation. There is no fee for device malfunction, software issues, or hardware failure. Chromebook Repair Costs: See https://bit.ly/3F5Pr7v. [Link does to a non-published spreadsheet. Nice job, MCPS] ---- So it seems extremely subjective whether a principal demands payment for malfunctions. IMO if you didn't hit it with a baseball bat or stomp on it, you should refuse to pay for normal wear and tear on these cheap junk devices that the school forced upon the students and made them carry around all year. |
