Charged $150 for chrome book replacement

Anonymous
Why are we responsible for $150 for chrome book replacement Thai’s not his fault?
It is just equipment failure ( not responsive/can’t be turned on) not due to negligence or intentional destruction.
How do we appeal this?

Have you considered just not paying.

MCPS assigned school equipment to students that they have to return. OP’s kid returned it. OP claims there was no negligence and the Chromebook just stopped working. Why should OP have to pay for it? Sometimes electronics just stop functioning.

That’s weird. When my kid’s chromebook stopped working, the school just gave him a different one. No charge.

That is not legal.

The principal wants the cash for his slush fund.

This is the in the ransom email

Students are expected to return all MCPS textbooks, library materials, Chromebooks, uniforms, and other instructional materials, supplies, and equipment, in good condition.

Students with outstanding obligations must clear them before receiving their Maryland High School Diploma.

I think it depends on the media person in your school. Some are nicer and some are horrible. Speaking from experience. It's like they are power hungry.

When my kids broke last year I recall having to share some info about what happened. Maybe a form? There was a threat of being charged somewhere but it never happened and was easily handled. I’d get on the phone in the morning to work it out.

+1 Especially since they used the Chromebook for years.

Same thing happened, they gave him a new one at the time. It was a few months ago. We are not aware of the $150 charge until we get this email today.

why should county taxpayers pay for something that you caused in your house? 150 sounds more than reasonable.

He didn’t do anything that caused the chrome book to stop working. It just happened to be in our house when it reached the end of life.

Don't know how you're gonna fight this in time for graduation, but good luck.
