Just watched it and am disgusted that a court system would be so derelict as to change one's age based on the shoddy 'evidence' that was provided. This series definitely sheds light on such injustices and the discrimination that exists for those with disabilities. So disturbing. Having some professional experience with and knowledge re: her condition and the impacts of childhood trauma, I am not surprised at her behaviors - as alleged to have occurred in the home of the adopted parents and in the first neighborhood where she was abandoned. (However, I believe the alleged behaviors re fabricated or grossly exaggerated.) Both parents are truly narcissistic and abusive.
There were so many missed opportunities to get assistance for her during her childhood. (I do believe the original birth year based on the evidence provided as well as photographs, behaviors, etc.) It is heartwarming to know that she is in a warm, accepting, loving home where she can heal and feel embraced. Anyway, can't wait to see the episode of her story and hope that the age can be changed back based on recently released evidence and actual medical documentation. (She deserves to win a lawsuit against the court system and her former adoptive abusers in my opinion.)
agree, it was heartbreaking to watch at the end of the series. Poor girl |
Michael is the exact definition of an unreliable narrator. What a lunatic!!! This guy 100% sexually abused Natalie IMO. Total creep |
iterally the craziest documentary I've seen since Abducted in Plain Sight. This is what I know:
-Natalia's mom was born in 1979, maternity confirmed through DNA -Natalia was re-aged to a birth year of 1989, meaning her mom would have been 10-though not impossible, likely implausible. -MD stated that on xray, her bone growth plates were not closed, thus she was still a child when this was done. Growth plates typically close around the end of puberty. -Multiple adults indicated Natalia acted adult-like and expressed overly sexualized behavior and very poor boundaries. This could be explained by hx of neglect, abuse. -Dad is a histrionic loon and an obvious liar. -Son implied she was abused by mom and she manipulated him in getting back at Natalia by peeing on her bed-seriously WTF? What I don't know: - If she really was an adult and they re-aged her to 22, meaning they no longer had a responsibility toward her, why did they keep checking on her, erasing her phone, questioning her actions? Screams of manipulation and knowledge that she probably wasn't really an adult a-plus probably cashing in on her SSDI. - Pubic Hair? Yay or nay? Could have been precocious puberty. What I do know is that you don't see pubic hair on a person on a children's psych unit and immediately throw them onto an adult unit sight unseen. -Mom? She's the true mystery here. Is she really the mastermind sociopath of this story? |
I think she should sue the hospital for the absolutely shocking g breach of confidentiality. It’s absolutely grotesque. |
The neighbors in that first apartment were all very clear that she was an adult in their eyes and that she was manipulative and scary. The fact the first family returned her like they did speaks volumes as well. |
I think he's the problem for sure. |
I’m only on episode 2 but here’s my current thoughts:
1. Totally agree the hospital employees should be fired. While it provided interesting corroboration for the parents’ side, it was a total abuse of their duty of confidentiality. 2. The dad is not a reliable narrator. He’s a good story teller (inflection, animation, etc), so far, three things he’s said/done make me not believe him abt anything: - he describes her apartment as a type of utopia - most expensive area in the state, full living room, kitchen, etc. Immediately, we see it’s a low level apartment. - he goes into her apartment and questions her about everything: CPS, donuts, where she walked, etc. It’s so evident that that hates Natalia and doesn’t believe a thing she says (no you weren’t walking there, no these donuts are not old, etc.). He deletes her contacts and tells her that on the video. He comes off horribly in the recording and she comes off calm, fearful, quiet (albeit dishonest). The video is shot from him because it’s pointed towards her and only records her - so he was the filming. Who is dumb enough to film that, know it's recording, and still can’t help himself but act like that? - his description of the cow fence being soooo scary - he hears his wife scream and he turns around to help but she motions him to go on to milk the cows, so he does?! Huh? If you really thought your spouse was in trouble and she’d just been left alone with a loon, you’d go back immediately. Milking cows wouldn’t take precedence. Then the farm employees said there was no risk at all, but I disregard that bc perhaps they didn’t know there was no risk. Him not helping his wife…shows he knew it wasn’t a major concern. As for Natalia: the judge was ridiculous because teens typically don’t grow until 18. Some, but that’s not the norm. From what I’ve seen so far, I think she was an adult or very close. - The aunt calls the biological mom on the phone and she says she’s been dealing with this for 10 years - which would have made her 17. - she looked nothing like the other 6 year old with the same type of dwarfism - she told others she was 23/26 at the apt complex - countless people thought she was an adult: 100% of the people at the apt complex (minus the leasing office woman, but her reasoning was bc she wanted candy - but she would do anything to hang out with others and seems to have a sweet tooth), the hospital employees, the couple who lived across from the apt complex, the grandpa whose grandson rode bikes with her, the mom of the other girl with the same dwarfism, her pediatrician, etc. The one thing I really dislike so far is the video they keep showing of her where she looks demonic. It’s just a video but it’s slowed down to make her look crazy. Where are the other two brothers? The adopted mom? No info from them? I disregard a lot of what the oldest brother says bc it sounds more to me like he and the dad have lived together a long time and their stories have morphed into a single truth. |
This was a lot to watch! The timelines were really confusing. Also they didn’t touch much on sexual abuse. The hospital just said she’s an adult because she has pubic hair and talks about sex? No investigation into where she learned about sex? She wasn’t 6 but she certainly wasn’t 22 at the time. It was a year or 2 after the adoption. |
Why wouldn’t the Lafayette neighbor who went to prison out a shirt on before being interviewed? |
Put a shirt on… |
I'm guessing Natalia was actually ~14yo when the Barnetts adopted her. Precocious puberty seems highly unlikely. She would have been around 17-18 when the Barnetts placed her in the apartment by herself.
I believe the agency in Ukraine lied and the first adoptive parents figured out Natalia's true age. Likely, she has attachment disorder and other mental/personality disorders as well. Combined with her severe dwarfism that causes her to be physically disabled, her mental disorders were probably too much for them to handle. Same with the Barnetts. Natalia probably is manipulative and has violent thoughts. I believe it's highly likely she's a sociopath. Given her age when she was hospitalized and then living in the Lafayette apartment, it wouldn't surprise me if she was sexually active or exhibiting predatory behavior. Her disorders and behaviors most likely stem from in-utero and childhood trauma, and perhaps genetics. I surmise the families who adopted her had cases of savior syndrome. At worst, one or both of the Barnetts are narcissists. Circumstances of the adoptions by the two families seem shady. The burden of dealing with a teen with extreme physical and mental disorders became too much for the families. I don't blame any of the adoptive parents for being unable to handle Natalia's issues. I know I couldn't handle it, which is why I would never seek out a child who came from Natalia's background. However, the Barnetts were negligent for placing Natalia in a non-therapeutic environment once they could no longer handle having her in their lives. The story is very complex, and it's nearly impossible to glean the truth from any of the documentaries or articles about the case. I'm sure the Barnetts have lied repeatedly, and they appear manipulative and destructive, but I imagine there's also some truth in many of their stories and allegations. No doubt, my hypothesis is full of holes, but it's what I'm able to digest. |
He's a sex offender who is walking around with a massive hernia. I think a shirt is the least of his worries. |
First I’ve heard of this. Did she get adopted into a family with other children? |
Yuck |
The pictures of her in 2009 show her baby teeth falling out and some new adult teeth coming in. She is clearly a child. Her mouth looks very much like a typical 7 year old. |
