Language immersion results

We did buy a home in a dual-immersion zone (Spanish) although I did apply for French immersion as I prefer French. We did not make it into the French lottery but my child is now learning in Spanish so I am ok with that. I speak both Spanish and French competently and I guarantee you once you learn one foreign language it is easy to learn another.

Maybe for french and Spanish, which are very similar, but not necessarily true across the board.

Anyone know how high the waitlist went for Sligo? How high a number did you get with or without living in high school cluster?

I was told several weeks ago that there are zero 2nd grade spots open in Chinese programs as of now, and maybe 5 open in 4th grade between the two schools...so not looking great for us. I'm not seeing any other Chinese immersion opportunities in the area, but if anyone knows of private options or great tutors, please let me know. Thanks!

Lots of chinese opportunity in Moco. Look at weekend Chinese school or Chinese after school programs.

I knew someone would say that. It is not true. My niece learned pretty decent Japanese from K-6 in a daily 1-hour after school program. She then switched to French in high school and said "I know HOW to learn a language now, so it's easy for me." I learned (basic) German quickly after learning Spanish and French for the same reason.

Some people are just good at learning languages. And I'm sure it doesn't hurt to have learned it once and learn another, but to claim there is any real advantage is a step too far IMO and language dependent. French and Spanish and Italian are pretty much the same family. German is not that far off from a mix of romance language and English. Japanese and Chinese are more similar but each is sufficiently different from any European language. Chinese has different intonations and no verb tenses, so I really don't see how learning french helps with that beyond the fact that learning anything helps with learning in general.

Move in bounds for Potomac ES.

Now that the deadline for first round selection has passed, I'm eager to hear which waitlists start moving (my kid got on all waitlists).

Any low numbers? Wishing you luck!

#6 for RCF and #7 for SC.

Older sibling is actually in the Page immersion right now but younger one got a super high number for Page. Older kid was in the high 20s and got off the waitlist 3 days before school started but it was the first full year of in person school after covid so I think they moved through the waitlist faster than previous years.

We got a low WL number (#7) and aren't in the HS cluster. Not sure how high the numbers got this year though.

Wait, really?

MCPS defines the regional priority for SC as "The following high school clusters: Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Montgomery Blair, Albert Einstein, Walter Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Northwood, Walt Whitman, and the Northeast Consortium–South (Residences south of Fairland and Randolph roads)." So more than just the DCC.

Curious whether you were in fact outside of that, if you don't mind clarifying.

Oh I didn't realize it included all those schools I thought it was the feeder HS, then yes we do fall into that priority list. Sorry for the confusion!

Wow, I'm jealous. Those are the two we wanted but we got super super high numbers. Although I suppose you must have wanted Page. There must be a better way to do this. I mean I know people are going to end up disappointed whatever they do but there must be a better way to do the lottery. Like what if people ranked choices and when they drew your name they assigned you to the top pick still available? For example. I don't know, perhaps that has already been considered.

So sorry you didn't get in. I do feel really lucky knowing we have a decent shot off two of the waitlists. I don't know how high your numbers are but I heard last year some schools went really high into the wait lists (like the hundreds). Good luck!
