I knew someone would  say that.  It is not true.  My niece learned pretty decent Japanese from K-6 in a daily 1-hour after school program.  She then switched to French in high school and said "I know HOW to learn a language now, so it's easy for me."  I learned (basic) German quickly after learning Spanish and French for the same reason. Some people are just good at learning languages. And I'm sure it doesn't hurt to have learned it once and learn another, but to claim there is any real advantage is a step too far IMO and language dependent. French and Spanish and Italian are pretty much the same family. German is not that far off from a mix of romance language and English. Japanese and Chinese are more similar but each is sufficiently different from any European language. Chinese has different intonations and no verb tenses, so I really don't see how learning french helps with that beyond the fact that learning anything helps with learning in general.[/quote]
