You think Bradlee is so nice that nice needs to be in all caps? Really? It's going to be a nice ghost town soon. |
Lots of the crime here is unresolved. They still haven't caught the person who shot a guy driving down the street from years ago. And most of the other shootings and car jackings are all unsolved. |
So...it's ok? |
Where on Duke? Heard nothing about this |
robbery and shooting at the 711. There was the shooting at Braddock road metro yesterday too. Then the shooting at Bradlee and an attempted kidnapping off a DASH bus. Some of these criminals are still at large. Over the weekend, there was an attempted car jacking. There is a violent crime wave in Alexandria right now. Alexandria is getting what it wanted - defunded police who can't hire, has to pick and chose what it responds to. A commonwealth's attorney who has a history of pressuring people to drop charges. And a mayor and city council who keep crowing that crime is down...not matter what we all see. You get what you vote for. |
.+ 1. And this cannot be good for retaining those nice stores there. I used to go shopping at Fresh Market with a baby in tow not that long ago, but I haven’t been wanting to go back lately. DH and I also got our wedding cake at that Alexandria Pastry Shop. We enjoy popping in there for a coffee/sandwich/treat every so often, but haven’t been frequenting that shopping center lately. It’s getting too much negative publicity. The stores and landlord cannot be happy about all the crime. |
They aren't happy about it and been very vocal but no one is listening - especially not the Mayor. A few weeks ago, there was an news article about all the violence. Wilson was quoted as saying that he was unaware that the businesses had concerns. There was a shooting where the victim crawled into the Duck Donuts and a stabbing/murder in the parking lot. But he apparently didn't make the leap from the crime and violence to business owners not being happy about it. |
It's infuriating. I already try to time any shopping at Bradlee to avoid the ACHS dismissal time. It's just getting worse and worse. |
What's the big deal really? This is what the voters of Alexandria want. There's a belief that by allowing the kids to run wild they'll be better contributors to society in the future. Judgment is what kills. Don't judge. |
+1 This is they city that Alexandria voters want. The criminals from yesterday are walking the streets today. And given Bryan Porter's record, the ones that are in custody will be walking the streets tomorrow. What is Porter fond of saying to victims? Oh yes, this “He said, ‘Is your daughter really sure she’s going through with this or is this you?’ and that [we] were going to ruin [the perpetrator’s] life,” Jane said. “So it was pressure, pressure, and finally I was like, ‘Bryan, I’m sorry, I don’t appreciate the phone call. We’re going through with this.’” Alexandrians LOVE Bryan Porter. |
People, you can be upset about the recent crime, and you can be dissatisfied with the current mayor / city council, but quit spouting right wing talking points and please identify what specific measures have been done by the current elected officials that relate to a crime increase.
They have not "defunded" the police. I believe there are vacancies, but all police departments are having challenges with recruitment. They are doing collective bargaining with city employees (one of the first in the state to do this as soon as state law changed to allow it,) They are not cutting $ from the budget. Maybe one of you is going to say they should be increasing $ to budget for law enforcement above what they are, but in my experience the folks that complain the loudest about local government also scream the loudest when increases in budget mean a higher tax bill. The one thing I can think of that "might" have an impact was the loss of support for SROs at school. Again, not sure if the most recent wave of crime being discussed here will end up having any connections with the schools at all, but in a general sense the argument could be made that it's a benefit to have police assigned inside the schools. However, if you happen to believe that (full disclosure: I'm pro SRO) then do your homework. It's not "the entire council" and it's not the Mayor who wanted to pull the SROs. It's was some folks from the previous Council (NEVER the majority of the School Board) and: John Chapman Canek Aguirre You need to call them out by name and vote them out if you don't like them. Fortunately, they are in the minority now, so SROs are back. This a deep blue town, and by being sloppy and lumping the entire Council and Mayor in to one big pile, rather than naming and shaming particular blowhards, you let them continue. |
It is a priority problem and the calls for increased density in a City that cannot provide infrastructure, schooling, and public safety for its residents are what make Justin and his ilk at fault. Instead of hoping to become a tourist destination for abortion seekers, the City needs to get back to basics. |
Can you cite where on this thread people were spouting right wing talking points? I can't find any mention of "defunding the police" here but perhaps I missed it when I re-read it. Also, you may want to update yourself on the SRO conversations between city council and the school board. A lot is not reported, one has to watch the meetings. |
You know Wilson could have voted against the budget that defunded the SROs, but he voted for it. He is very weak on the issue. And he never said a peep about the schools being closed for so long. The whole council and CA Porter are proponents of soft policing and bail "reform". And the council in no way provides adequate infrastructure of any sort to go along with their push for high density low income housing. There are no policy differences from San Francisco or Chicago, its just much smaller. Alexandria used to be quirky and unique, now its just like every other tax base fleeing city in the country. |
They have no defended any police however they did reallocate $700k from the sro program. |
