They have not "defunded" the police. I believe there are vacancies, but all police departments are having challenges with recruitment. They are doing collective bargaining with city employees (one of the first in the state to do this as soon as state law changed to allow it,) They are not cutting $ from the budget. Maybe one of you is going to say they should be increasing $ to budget for law enforcement above what they are, but in my experience the folks that complain the loudest about local government also scream the loudest when increases in budget mean a higher tax bill.

The one thing I can think of that "might" have an impact was the loss of support for SROs at school. Again, not sure if the most recent wave of crime being discussed here will end up having any connections with the schools at all, but in a general sense the argument could be made that it's a benefit to have police assigned inside the schools.

However, if you happen to believe that (full disclosure: I'm pro SRO) then do your homework. It's not "the entire council" and it's not the Mayor who wanted to pull the SROs. It's was some folks from the previous Council (NEVER the majority of the School Board) and:
John Chapman
Canek Aguirre
You need to call them out by name and vote them out if you don't like them. Fortunately, they are in the minority now, so SROs are back.
This a deep blue town, and by being sloppy and lumping the entire Council and Mayor in to one big pile, rather than naming and shaming particular blowhards, you let them continue.

Can you cite where on this thread people were spouting right wing talking points? I can't find any mention of "defunding the police" here but perhaps I missed it when I re-read it.

Also, you may want to update yourself on the SRO conversations between city council and the school board. A lot is not reported, one has to watch the meetings.

You know Wilson could have voted against the budget that defunded the SROs, but he voted for it. He is very weak on the issue. And he never said a peep about the schools being closed for so long. The whole council and CA Porter are proponents of soft policing and bail "reform". And the council in no way provides adequate infrastructure of any sort to go along with their push for high density low income housing. There are no policy differences from San Francisco or Chicago, its just much smaller. Alexandria used to be quirky and unique, now its just like every other tax base fleeing city in the country.

that's the key right there when people say Wilson supports SROs in the schools. Poor John Chapman, Wilson's water must be awfully heavy.

What happened now? Why would you post this with no additional information?!

APD tweeted about a meeting they and "city leadership" had at the 1200 block of Madison today. From the photos, not a single city council member, including the mayor, could be bothered to show up.

Same as yesterday. Four black males robbing a beating a hispanic male in the driveway across from the Shell station. They ran behind ACHS and over to the dealership.

I read a shoot out/ robbery next to the Shell station with kids running across the street behind the car dealership.

I also read a group of kids assaulted a rob another kid who was standing at the bus stop that is across from the Shell (witnessed by a woman stuck in traffic on King).

You need to be on the neighborhood listservs.

I don’t blame the police. I blame the city council, school board and mayor (who really has no power but loves to be quoted in articles). I didn’t vote for any of them. I didn’t ask for this.

Robbery and beating. No shooting on 4/18 although police said the assailants were holding on to something on their waistbands. They ran to ACHS AND the car dealership.

Prosecute police officers for defending the public, and you will have problems recruiting. Import gangs illegally and you will have turf wars. Don’t prosecute crime and you will have more crime.

The police scanner said there were 3 or 4 guys with full face masks on at king st metro that grabbed a guy, dragged him off the bus and robbed him on monday. No one is talking about that either. This is so shocking to me.

Abortion has nothing to do with it, and you sound like the person the Bring Back Integrity FB group who posted the same thing so now your identity is blown.I won't post it here but anyone can see you post the same things both places. And on the Rosemont listserv. When you bring up the abortion zoning, it just negates the rest of your argument. Seriously, stop.

We have HUGE problems in Alexandria. You sound ridiculous.

If you do the math city of Alexandria has a higher murder rate than NYC.

NYC homicide rate is approximately 4.8 per 100k, Alexandria’s is less than 3 per 100k.

There were 6 homicides in Alexandria last year. There are approximately $153K residents. Get a better calculator.

Time for you to move. Plenty people want your house

The mayor was touting the city’s proximity to airport to advocate for the zoning change. How is this being ridiculous? Just more potential crime victims in my book.

If it's single family, make sure you wait until single family zoning is killed. Sell to a developer who will build a couple of townhouses or a small apartment building. Your neighbors want it.

Also, there were two ODs at Alexandria High School yesterday according to police. I can't believe people feel good about sending their kids there everyday and say everything is fine.
