Anyone super disappointed or surprised by FA package?

With 3 kids in private and 340 HHI we got 6-10% at two schools. Those $3-5,000 each will help a lot, but we watch everything we spend money on. We are definitely among the poorest people in our schools. Families with similar income (there are a few) usually only have 1 kid in private.

You are far from poor. Be real.

We will have two in private in two years at a 300k HHI. We’re hopeful we’ll get aid.

isn't it crazy to see people with a 340K HHI calling themselves "poor?"

If you can't afford private school, send your kids to public school like almost everyone else

Or, you could reduce your expenses and pay for it and save the aid for people who actually need it. You should be embarrassed.

They said among the poorest people at their school. Which speaks volumes about the degree of true diversity at their school.

There is a difference between being poor and being in a budget. You are not poor. You have chosen to put 3 kids through private school, which puts a large dent even in your *hefty* income. But you are not poor.

That was us last year, we got more than $40K spread between our two children.

I was floored. But then I realize that the school says they give a lot of aid, and I don't see a lot of people who appear to have less $ than we have.

What is your HHI?

I'm a single parent making about $80K. My ex usually makes about the same but was out of work most of that year due to medical reasons, and he also had major medical bills.

I am definitely not poor, but I would guess that we are in the bottom 25% of the school income wise. Kids are in elementary so possible that “poorer” families will join in highschool since it’s only 4 years of tuition.

Wow. So did you take the whole $40k even though you could have made it work with $15k?

What a bizarre question. NP

This entire thread is awkward AF. The reason the financial aid forms are so extensive is that there is a lot more that goes into the decision than total compensation. If you can't make the numbers work with what they give you - you gotta just bounce to another school where the numbers work.

How about we stop with the “poor” bs and go with “less wealthy”

If you know you're not poor, then maybe use another word?

I'm the $80K single parent from above. I would never use the word poor to describe our family. And yes, the vast majority of families in our school have higher incomes than we do. That doesn't mean we're poor. It means they (and you) are wealthy.

Again, I never said we are poor. I said we are poorer than most other families. If you prefer, I can say “less rich”. It means the same for me
