Anyone super disappointed or surprised by FA package?

That was us last year, we got more than $40K spread between our two children.

I was floored. But then I realize that the school says they give a lot of aid, and I don't see a lot of people who appear to have less $ than we have.

OP here. This is us. HHI 300k According to DCUM we won't get aid but we're about the least wealthy people I know at the schools and clearly they think so too because they gave us more aid than we ever thought to ask for. It's a little sobering. I didn't think we were that "poor" relative to our parent peers. I mean, I know we're in the lower brackets but huh-guess we are at charity level. Kids are academic high performers, athletes and very well liked.

Why is it sobering? Because you think you are the poor people at your school or because your school, despite the rhetoric, doesn’t admit any students who are actually poor?

This is amazing. We just passed 200k this year and 2-3 years ago our school said we could afford 50k, which was ridiculous at our previous HHI. We live in a much smaller place than most and only had 1 kid so that we could afford as much as we could. Just goes to show they reward irresponsibility.

Do any of you mind mentioning schools that are generous with financial aid? And experiences with schools that are not so generous?

"Need aware" schools or "full need met" schools will generally give better packages but acceptance is less likely.

K-12, big endowment, consistently in the black on 990s.

K-8 with stronger bottom line.

Schools that go over 50% and your DC meets a school need or priority.

It depends tremendously on the school and also in how much they want the kid. schools have very deep pockets for a kid they want. This is especially true for high schoolers because they (the school) are just signing up for a 4 year financial loss on a kid and not 12 years on a kid who may or may not even turn out to have value for the school. A surprising number of people >300k and even higher get aid for 9th grade admits because the kids are bringing something to the table that the school wants.

Also the schools don't function under some code where financial aid recipients are only allowed to have one kid. They want talented kids. Period. If you have 8 superstar athlete/scholars, they are happy to pay to have all 8 on campus.

You attend the FA info sessions and listen carefully.

Which schools give aid. Our combined income in 150. Already have DS in private high school. DD is straight A top of class sprays sport very active in school clubs and we very disappointed in the aid given to DD. We are exploring options of trying to find a school that will give us more aid. Public school not an option we don't live in a good public school area.

Does DS get aid? What grade is DD in?

At $150 HHI I would expect you to get 50% at many places
