So far 33 Applications total (1 internal referral, 4 recruiters) - 3 rejections
6 interviews, 2 rejections, 4 still considering

Internal referral was made 1st day of being laid off. No response yet. This internal referral would be my top tier choice.
I had a pretty good interview today, decent firm.
I have had a long standing offer for past 2 years to return to my pre-pandemic company. In the interest of maintaining career trajectory, I have to continue turning it down.

Health insurance runs out at end of this month. Looking at state sponsored health insurance after that and it is making me very anxious and sad for my kids. Wah!

Follow up - in 6th week of unemployment.
Up to 42 (from 33) Applications total (1 internal referral, 4 recruiters) - 3 rejections
Turned down 2 offers (- these positions were a step backwards.)
Have a 2nd interview next week with the "pretty good interview" decent firm from last week.
But OMG my dream firm from 3 years ago called me in for an interview next week. I was SO certain that my recent email would fall into another void. This time, instead of emailing HR, I emailed directly to the managing director.

Wish me luck. Oh boy!
Last week I toyed with the idea of giving it all up and opening a bubble tea franchise...

OP here. Oh wow good luck!!! So exciting!

Starting to feel a bit more positive that I may get something out of this exercise. Although I'm hitting the hard technical portions so there's still a good chance I'll wipe out on all of these I guess. :-/ Hope everyone else on this thread got good responses in the last week, too!

OP back again with updates.

> 1 technical exercise (submitted, we'll see how it goes) -> still waiting on this, which is sad because this is the job I want most

Hope everyone else is making progress too. It's interesting that so far all my applications that got to the interview stage have been progressing. I guess the resume screeners are good at guessing fit or I interview well.

OP back for Friday check-in lol

This week I'm looking at my spreadsheet of applications and thinking that I actually had a pretty good response rate. Lots of nos of course, but I appreciate that most of them actually communicated their no to me, rather than just totally ghosting me.

Not quite Friday but it's been an eventful week. Feeling vaguely ill about having to make decisions/commit but excited that things are moving. I have no idea how people do this more often than like once a decade...

Wow OP I’m encouraged by your progress. Great news for you! Please keep posting updates. I’m following the closely.

I’ve applied to 27 positions since January. So far I’ve received 5 referrals, 3 non referrals, and no news on the rest. Some vacancies are still open. No interviews so far.

Great updates, OP!! Keep it up!

Just found out today that a job I interviewed for in Dec and really wanted did not select me. I felt like they were stringing me along/back benching me, and I was right. Oh well. I had heard they were a sh!tshow internally, but loved the subject matter and the project. Sigh.

25 submissions

-1 screening, full interview, no offer
-1 full interview, no offer
-1 screening interview, waiting to be invited to full interview
-1 online assessment prior to interview, waiting for results and interview invite
-4 had the courtesy to let me know I was not a good fit

I have about 15 others I will review and decide whether to apply for or not.

Also saw on LinkedIn two people I know get jobs that I applied for. They were definitely better candidates, so I don't feel so badly about it.

OP here. Good luck to you! The waiting is the worst, I think. Hope you hear something positive next week.

OP here. Thank you; it really helps to have some anonymous people to tell about it since my friends definitely don't want a never-ending play-by-play of my applications! Sorry about the Dec job; that's rough. I'm taking March off new applications since I'm feeling pretty run ragged by interviews and technical exercises (and I need to do my taxes lol) but if none of these pan out I'm going to have to restart applications. Annoyingly one of the positions (posting from August 2022) that rejected me with a "position was filled" email a few weeks ago just reposted literally the same job again. Like seriously? I'm mildly put out because their application process had so many random requirements it took me ages to fill out, and I'm somewhat overqualified for the position and they didn't even want to interview me.

Hope you get those two interviews!

I applied to a Fed job (USA jobs) at the beginning of the year that had just under 20,000 applicants. I don't believe at all there is a worker shortage.

How / where are you guys applying? Blasting out applications on LinkedIn? Emailing recruiters? Corporate websites? etc. Just curious where you are experiencing the highest hit rates or any other lessons learned to have more success when searching.

OP here. I search for jobs in my target location/skillset on indeed. Then I go check the company website and if I like the company I check the open positions and apply for one (sometimes the one I found on indeed sometimes a different one) I think I’m best suited to. I’m taking a break from new applications right now but when I was doing 3-5 a week I checked for new jobs posted every 24 hours — with my filters that usually gave me 2-3 possible options to consider. I definitely had better luck with recently postings, although one of the ones I got an interview for was older.

For things that didn’t work: I tried posted on some alum groups I’m a member of since people swear by networking but the suggestions I got there didn’t really pan out for me. I have been avoiding LinkedIn recruiters because they feel really pushy and I like to me deliberate in my applications/decisions.

OP here. Cannot wait for this to be over but cautiously optimistic I'll get something in the next month or so? Do to various interleaving delays and different interview processes, I think I've managed to time it so I'll get all the offers I'm going to get roughly at the same time so I can choose between concrete options which is honestly amazing.

Keep up the good work, OP. We're rooting for you!

Me: 158 jobs applied for since getting laid off last year. 12 interviews (mostly recruiters), 103 rejections. 19 of the rejections were Federal "not referred" applications.
Have 55 applications submitted. 25 are Federal "accepting" or "reviewing" applications. Have received some referrals but no invitations to interview.
I just can't get traction and struggling financially. I know I'm supposed to be optimistic but feeling punch drunk.

That sounds so exhausting and stressful! Crossing my fingers that you get something positive soon.

55+ applications to federal jobs since July 2022. Referred for probably half of them. Zero interviews. Networked my absolute guts out for one job - application submitted in January - no response. So disheartening.

I hope your round the corner soon and can put this behind you. So sorry to hear about your struggles.
