Job hunt stats

Because I don’t want to bore or stress out my friends with this nonsense..,

So far I’m at:
25 applications
10 rejections
2 first round interviews
2 second round interviews (scheduled so we’ll see how that goes)

I was beginning to get pretty disheartened by the rejections even though I understand it. But I’m very excited that I made it to the second round of interviews for both the companies that contacted me! How are you doing fellow job hunting DCUMers?

Well done, PP!

I applied to 13.

Never heard back from 5, with 2-4 months having passed.
1 said I wasn't a good fit.
Had 2 interviews and 1 screening interview; rejected from one, and waiting to see if I am invited to follow-up interviews on the other two
Other 5 are too freshly applied to, we'll see where they go

And of course, keeping my eyes open and continuing to apply.

How can these stats be true if employers can’t find anyone to hire?

Do you lack critical thinking skills? unemployment may be at 3.4% but there’s plenty of under qualified people applying at my company

I’m very qualified and still only get rejections.

Today, I set a new world's record for rejections. But last week I went through two great situations. Hoping one in particular crosses the finish line.

I’m not actually looking for a new job, but am looking to interview to see what I should shoot for when I am looking (a year from now). Of 40 applications sent out over the last month, I’ve gotten only rejections. Advanced degree, work in IT, diverse and good career experience. It’s…disheartening.

Under qualified or too old. I'm GenX and pretty sure I'm getting passed over for jobs because of my age.

I think it’s a bad time to be looking in tech in general. Hope you get some positive responses soon!

OP back.

Interview 3/? went well but now I'm getting really excited about this job. Hoping I don't get booted in the final stages. (Interview 2/3 for the other company is scheduled for next week but I'm generally less excited for that job.)

Hope the other seekers are having good luck!

Fingers crossed for you OP! That sounds encouraging. I’m applying for federal jobs for the first time at 50+. Started 8 weeks ago and applied to 6 jobs.

1: Applied 8 weeks ago, referred 6 weeks ago
2: Applied 5 weeks ago, no word
3: Applied 5 weeks ago, referred last week, then not referred
4: Applied 4 weeks ago, ineligible yesterday
5: Applied 3 weeks ago, no word
6: Applied 3 weeks ago, referred

Waiting is hard, but rejection is worse. It’s hard to stay positive, and I’ve just begun. Sigh.

When I worked at my old company on average for every hundred Resumes HR would phone screen 10 then we bring in 3-4 and interview and hire one.

Statistically you had a 1 percent chance when you apply.

Hence the term Rage Applying. You splatter then out to first make it through Applicant Tracking System, then pre screening call.

I applied 500 jobs in my last big job search, interviewed 30-40 companies and got two job offers.

Why does the Fed like younger people. I recall the LIRR (union job) that pays a huge fat for life pension after just 25 years with medical decided no new hires under 40. In fact their preference was over 50. That way their pension obligations drop like a brick

I’m curious about this scattershot approach. Were there 500 jobs you were qualified for, that interested you, in your preferred location and desired salary range? Or did you apply to everything? I’d imagine the odds are way lower this way than a more targeted search. Is it really just a numbers game?

OP here. I guess I could see 500 depending on situation. For me, I’m looking to move to another country but I’m not picky where within the country so I see 1-2 interesting jobs for my skillset posted on indeed every day. I don’t have the energy for that rate though; I’m doing more like 2-3 a week. And I think I’m going to take March off applications to do my taxes and focus on interviews (I had a third company call to do a phone screen today). I think the desire to move might be an issue though; I wonder how many of my instant rejections came from someone looking at my US address and assuming I wouldn’t move.
