Daycare violating child to teacher ratio

Anonymous
A center isn't required to have many staff. In a family daycare is 1 person for 2 infants. And 1 for 8 toddlers. But ours has always 2 people there with 6 kids. The 3rd assistant can leave early to go home and pick up her elementary child.

If you don't like having the kids at pick up time in the same room then go pick up your child ON TIME. Whiny OP.

I hope they kicked you out for annoying. That's their right. They they end the contract anytime.

Op is crazy.
Centers ratios are 3 infants 1 teacher, family daycare is 2 for 1 teacher.

1 person can care 10 kids older than 2 years old. I would prefer 2 people there. Since there's two adults they can have 6 infants and 10 kids ages 2- 6 years old

Center ratios are more kids in care and less staff.

I prefer a family daycare.

For the one saying you are afraid exposing your kid to germs. Just hide forever at home with your child.

Both of you will suffer and develop compromised immune system.
Kids needs to be exposed to germs.

Or 6 infants and 5 toddlers with 2 teachers.
The law says 1 teacher can be with 12 kids. Crazy but true

I wish they paid better the assistants from centers. The government should fund more Education and Healthcare and social programs

I don't think the early educators like your kids...

Are you picking up your son as soon as possible?

The ratios and age separation exist for a reason.

Good to know. I am also concern about extra exposure to viruses, with my child being placed in various rooms and interacting with more people he has higher chances to get sick It is not just new kids, but also new teachers in the last 30 minutes of the day when he is tired already

The ratio thing is concerning but the pooling of kids is incredibly common unfortunatley and you will find it at most centers. it's just a necessity when you can't have staff working 9,10, 11 hours and the daycare is open that long. Basically if you want a center to be open past 5 pm you're going to have some pooling in most centers. You are right about the concerns of pooling, this is not an option for everyone but if it's possible alter your work schedule so it is earlier to earlier, that helped us to avoid this. Again understand this isn't an option for everyone.

It is DC, I have checked the requirements online. I am afraid to create trouble as I do not plan to leave that daycare. It is the cheapest in the area and it is not that bad otherwise.

Failing to maintain proper ratios is bad.

Shall I try to properly document it with videos and pictures as they can always say- the parent is confused but both me and my husband noticed, the other parents do not seem to care much about it though

They probably won’t act based on your report alone, they will do an unannounced inspection and count ratios for themselves.

This. It happened at my old daycare and someone reported them (we think a former teacher). They didn’t get shut down or anything but it shows up in the inspection reports online and they were more careful after that. Inspections are so rare that some daycares know they can get away playing loose with the rules.

Thank you for sharing. I kinda thought along the same line ...t if the daycare is being that obvious with violating the ratio, they do not care much about reports ...

PP here- so in our case I believe they started doing this after their annual inspection. They took on an extra kid for the summer, so they just took the chance being out of ratio for a few months because they thought they could (also not unusual for someone to be absent for illness, vacation, etc. so they weren't out of compliance every day). Another parent thought it had happened previously as well (let a new infant in a few months before another kid actually left). But no one reported them at the time.

At least 5 times over the last two months, I have noticed 9 kids in a room with only two teachers present with some new child whose is out of town and traveling with his mother. Moreover everyday the teachers are rushing to leave the daycare at 5pm and since the daycare opens till 5:45pm they put all kids whose parents have not picked them up yet (12-36 and up sometimes) in one room My husband count 12 kids of various ages and only 2 teachers present. Is it typica; to other daycares as well? My concern is if they disregard that rule, what other rules they ignore ?

Can you be specific OP? Are you in Virginia? Is it a small daycare of 5kids or large family daycare of 12 kids? In Maryland is 8 total for a small family daycare and 10 for a large family daycare
