Since your dh is shorter and his family is short it is likely that your son inherited his genes. Has your son mentioned anything? Being short is not the end of the world and I would not let your son think that you think it is.

Yes, he notices because he said that he used to be tall in middle school but now everyone is taller. He plays a sport and the shorter stature is not helpful in his sport.

As others have said, you can't know for sure, but what you are describing is a common experience. I know a boy whose parents are both short. His voice changed in fourth grade and he was relatively tall or at least average in early MS, but he stopped growing at 5'5" and was done by 8th grade. My kid on the other hand didn't hit puberty until after 8th grade. They were about the same heigh in eighth grade, but my son and is now 6'2." 5'6" is not a horrible height. I'd work to get him comfortable with it.

Ending up a couple of inches shorter than his father isn't out of the ordinary, my DS (who has finished growing) is 2 1/2" shorter than his father.

Yup, my Dad is 6'2. Both of his brothers are 6'3.

I'm 5'11

I'm not complaining; I'm "tall enough" without having to deal with the pain of actually being tall (like airplane seats, etc), but I definitely did think I would above 6 feet

This. My dh was 20.5 when we met and he grew an inch taller by the time he was 22.

DH is on the shorter side (his family is short) and DS is still 2" shorter than his dad right now. I am average female height, and we don't have short genes on mu side of the family.

DS probably started puberty at age 12. Has he stopped growing? He was hoping to grow another 3-4" but I don't know what to say to him. He seems to eat fine, exercise often.

Anyone whose DS stopped growing for a half a year then had another huge growth spurt, or is our son reaching his height limit?

Be hones, he's 15, not exactly a little kid anymore. Tell him the science part on how Genes play a HUGE role. I mean, Dad is 5'8". He might be lucky to be the same height or a bit more.

My son who started puberty around 12 as well had his last stretch around 15 1/2 yrs old. He is 17 1/2 now and hasn't grown since then. He's the same height as dad.

These anecdotal stories are the outliers and not helping OP.

OP needs to get DS comfortable with a 5'6 or 5'7 height

I know it sucks more for guys but just like for females slim always helps for guys built always helps so help him get muscular for his self esteem--obviously only if he wants to.

And if he's interested in getting muscular, being short actually helps that.

I am also 5'4. Husband is 5'8. Son is now 5'6". I guess the slightly early puberty also means he finishes early.

I'm also 5'4 but I married tall, so my oldest is 6'0" like his dad.

However, my cousins who married 5'8"s, their kids are about 5'7"-5'8".

Look at the boy puberty signs. You can easily find them online. Underarm and other hair. Voice, Adam’s Apple,
Also look at his knees, how low or high are they?
