DS Hasn't Grown in Height for 6 months. Is he reaching his height limit?

Anonymous
I’m sorry OP- I know it can be hard to see our kids disappointed and not be able to do anything to help. My own son is looking like he is going to end up smaller than we would’ve expected (and smaller than his dad) so I get it.

Based on what you described, I’d assume in your mind that he is done growing, and if he does squeak out another inch or 2 consider it a pleasant surprise.

I think height (particularly at 5’6”-5’8”) is really not that big of a deal overall- even for men- but it seems like such a big deal for high school sports and can be so disappointing for teen boys. Lots of threads about this.

One thing I will say: as long as his sport is not basketball, height isn’t necessarily THE deciding factor for sports. Being so far through puberty, he should have a big advantage over some of the other boys in terms of strength and building muscle- even if those boys are taller. He should shift focus to strength, lifting weights, building muscle etc

Talk with your doctor to discuss your concerns about his height

In the meantime, make sure he gets adequate sleep. Majority of his Growth hormone is released during sleep.

Take quality supplements for growth - vitamin d/k, mineral supplement etc

Get enough Protein

Physical exercise

I'm going to have him sleep by 7pm until he turns 16. Have those growth hormones work overtime.

It's hard to believe he might be nearing the end of the physical growth. I need to suck it up and keep it to myself. I'd imagine it is much harder on him than it is on me.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

Most growth spurts happen in the summer (why I don’t know, maybe vitamin d etc) so I wouldn’t count him out yet. Feet stop growing first - my girls was 2 years before they stopped growing

Dream on...there is no way a 15 year old is going to go to bed at 7pm. You want him to pass his classes, right?

Being short is not the end of the world! Be grateful for what you do have!

I mean, there is nothing to be said or done about it. It is what is it. I wish I were thin, but even with very strict healthy eating, I am average weight. Sometimes our bodies don't grow and develop the way we want, and we have to cope with it.

My boys (all three) continued to grow in college. I think they finally stopped at around 22ish.

I was joking. Gez...most teens sleep at 10-11pm.

I am also 5'4. Husband is 5'8. Son is now 5'6". I guess the slightly early puberty also means he finishes early.

I'm also 5'4 but I married tall, so my oldest is 6'0" like his dad.

However, my cousins who married 5'8"s, their kids are about 5'7"-5'8".

what is the point of this? you married better than your cousin?

There are pros and cons to most every body type, and unfortunately we don’t get to choose. Its natural to worry, but if the kids are healthy otherwise there is nothing a parent can or should do, other than be encouraging and accepting.

I dont know about boys but I do know when girls get their period at 10--like my two daughters did(while I was basically 13) the chance of breast cancer does increase somewhat, as well as heart disease and earlier menopause--so its not great--but again--nothing you can do.....
