DS Hasn't Grown in Height for 6 months. Is he reaching his height limit?

Anonymous
Toward the end of their growth you don't see the huge growth spurts and they squeak out a couple of inches, maybe. So certainly possibly yours will.

Most boys are done growing by turning 16 and grow most quickly between 12 and 15.

How tall is your husband?

5'8" so not tall, but I just figure DS would at least be his height if not a little taller.

He was growing quite a lot at 12 through the early part of 14. Then the height has just slowed down since.

This indicates he is at the end of his growth trajectory. But, he may grow another an inch or so and then stop.

DS 17 was a late bloomer. He never had a real spurt, just slow and steady, about 2" or so every year. At his last pediatrician appt this past summer he had grown a whopping 3.5" from the previous year (that was sarcasm). The dr said based on his growth trajectory, he's still growing and hasn't hit the tail end.

Puberty at 12 for a boy isn't too early, but it is on the earlier side. DS didn't hit really hit puberty until like 15. He is now 17.5.

My pediatrician reassured me that my son, who is 12.5 and hasn't started growing yet (or puberty really) will just continue to keep growing at the steady rate until he has his growth spurt so it wasn't a bad thing to be a late bloomer, they often end up taller. He's about 5ft now and his dad is over 6ft.

If your DH is one of the taller people in a very short family, not necessarily.

My 6'1" spouse had a major growth spurt at 19-20. Relatively short all through HS, and then grew a bunch in college.

This is our family. My older one had his biggest growth spurt right before turning 16. He’s still growing slowly at 17. His feet had a big jump from 10 to 12 from Freshmen year.

My 14-year old Freshmen (15 this April) hasn’t had a growth spurt yet nor has his voice changed. He just outgrew me at 5’5” so he’s probably 5’6” but so skinny he doesn’t look that big.

My husband and I are dead average height (5’5” and 5’10”), but both are the shortest on both sides of our families for our genders. All the women are 5’8” and men over 6 feet. We both grew late and the men all grow in college. My brother was 5’10” when he left high school and 6’2” when he left college. I grew an inch from 5’4” to 5’5” in college. My sister is 5’8”.

No idea. Everyone is different. But my older one seemed to stop after big spurt but is recently growing again.

Did he grow after they found out?

Yes, they grew a lot very quickly after diagnosis and starting a gluten free diet.

So he's 5'6" at 15 and dad is 5'8", he will probably grow a bit more in the next few years. Make sure he eats nutritious foods and exercises!

Same with my husband. He grew from 5'10" to 6'3" after age 18 when he was in college. I met him in his late 20s but when we went to his 25th high school reunion it was all people said to him "what happened? you're so tall!".

Our DS grew an inch after leaving for college, and he's older, with a Fall birthday (turned 19 in early Fall of college freshman year)

College growth is normal for men in our family. Do you know of any pattern in yours?
Anonymous
Unfortunately, probably yes. It's a little early, but on average, boys stop around 16.

And if he started early too, then he'll finish a little early

He may be done, he may not be done.

Ending up a couple of inches shorter than his father isn't out of the ordinary, my DS (who has finished growing) is 2 1/2" shorter than his father.
