Why? Personally, I'd rather my child have the option to go at all (should they choose), and I knew that their stats were not an automatic admission for fall.

The other option for the "spring start" (but really fall start) kids isn't denial (UMD needs the tuition), it's acceptance. This is just a shady play by UMD to game the rankings.

Many schools do this. Some have their own programs for the kids in the fall that are required (think NEU the NUIn/NU Global scholars or NUBOund) , others you just have the option to take classes elsewhere. Yes, it "games the rankings" a bit, but really it's about backfilling the slots of kids who drop out after fall semester. It's a guaranteed Transfer in program that ensures the college has enough students paying tuition come spring (and the next fall). It's not unique to UMD. [/quote

No many schools do not do it this way.

They start kids in the summer which is way better.

Starting class at 4 in the afternoon no thanks. Plus Business majors end up at Shady Grove again nope.

But the classes are in the afternoon. Slightly smaller choice of classes.
It's a way to offer admission to students who would otherwise be deferred because of slightly weaker test scores or GPAs.

NO

They have very special dorms for these kids and they are insanely expensive.

And this is a stupid program always has been. It has changed a little of the years . I would never let my kid do this. Penn State and UF do it better by starting kids in the summer.

You are completely wrong. I have no idea where you’re getting your info. My daughter is a junior who attended this program at umd. They are housed with everyone else not in a special dorm. It is not more expensive. They take classes on the CP campus and they go on their UMD transcript. It is completely legit and a great program.

Wrong! My business major is not at Shady Grove. She takes all her classes at the Robert H Smith business school building on campus.

Freshman connection classes can be any time of day on Fridays and as early as 3 on M-Th. My daughter finished all classes by dinner time and loved the schedule.

My daughter was also accepted spring semester 2024. Her story is like a lot of others--good grades, rigorous courses, good AP scores and she attends a competitive high school (in Howard County). She didn't submit an SAT score. She is annoyed that she didn't get in for fall, but after realizing that several the other kids in her art class were also admitted for spring semester she feels good about being able to go to UMD in the fall. We are anxious to see what course options she'll have since she's already completed some courses through AP exams and community college classes.

Oops--haven't adjusted to new year yet! My daughter was accepted for spring 2025, not 2024!

Here us a link to UMD class schedule. Believe its all public info. You may need to play around with dates and program (freshman connection) to find what you are looking for. Fall 2024 is not yet available but you can see 2023.

It sounds like spring admission is in name only - since the students live on campus and take classes (albeit in the afternoon!) like everyone else. I would understand spring admission - if student offered a spot starting Jan. 2025. Why is this process more complicated than it needs to be - not just at UMD but elsewhere?

NP, just speaking for UMD, guessing it's NOT a housing issue. My guess would be that with a group of students transferring out and graduating in December, it opens up some capacity for classrooms and instructors in the spring. I'm sure "reporting" also plays a part.

Just to put this into perspective, I started UMCP as a spring start freshman back in the late 90s and graduated in 3.5years with the rest of my class. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude. They didn't have freshmen connection back then so I lived at home that spring and moved onto campus the following fall. It was a super easy transition and I don't regret it one bit. If you kid is willing to defer to the spring, do it! UMD is a wonderful school and they'll love it.

Anonymous wrote:Yes, my DD was offered spring admission. Gee, I thought her scores were pretty good. 4.68 Weighted, 3.98 1400 SAT APS with 5 's ya da da da da .

Not sure she'll go.

Is she in state? MoCo or another high income school district?

Everyone I know in this situation with the details I added was either spring admit or rejected.

Yeah, the usually want a 4.2.

It’s nothing against your student. UMD has to play the rankings game to keep demand high.

My kid was OOS with 4.4 and 1550 for spring admission. UMD has locked up many CS related majors in its CS school. I think it’s a mistake and one most other schools don’t make—IT adjacent majors are now limited enrollment majors at UMD.

Kid wanted Data Science but had to go to CS School. Can’t get into CS school as an internal transfer. UMD will be a decline for kid.

They just have CS major. Data science is a track within the major. As far as I know, CS is the only major with the new restricted numbers. Although a LEP, it would appear that a student could complete the prerequisites and major in Computer Engineering. Not ideal, but other related programs recommended by the school are: Geospatial Data Science, Immersive Media Design, Information Science, Information Systems, Social Data Science, and Technology and Information Design. Math would make sense too.
