Thats a great SAT score and grades. Spring Admission is absurd but I'm assuming they do it to balance out those who drop out mid-year. |
+1. Thank you. It is sort of nuts. DD knows kids who didn’t do as well as she and were offered fall admission.

They are balancing out students that graduate in the fall (either early or late) and also filling in for travel abroad. Spring admitted students can participate in Freshman Connection https://admissions.umd.edu/enroll/admission-decision-faqs/freshmen-connection They can move into campus housing and participate in clubs and sports, but they take classes in the evenings. "Freshmen Connection offers a superb selection of UMD courses which fulfill major and General Education requirements. Credits and grades post to the Maryland transcript and are included in the Maryland GPA. Courses are taught by University faculty in campus classrooms 3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Friday. It may be they only accept so many from each high school and your school has lots of qualified kids applying. Tell her congratulations. She got in. Good for her. |
Yup! Live in dorms, dine at dining hall. Everything. It is called Freshman Connection. They "officially" enroll in the spring but they can take courses and live on campus, starting in the fall. |
Interesting and logical theory. Is she from Whitman or similar? |

My daughter also got spring admissions. She has fantastic grades and has been taking really rigorous courses in high school I am very happy that she got in. It just sucks that there are so few options for universities here in the state of Maryland that her fantastic grades and ACT score, didn't qualify her for a fall admission. It might be what somebody said where they only take so many students per high school or county We are in a pretty rigorous high school and many also took rigorous courses and have a high GPA.

| DD got spring admission a few years ago and chose to attend Freshman Connection. There is really zero downside unless your child is an early bird who wants morning classes. The kids still arrive on campus in the fall, live in the dorm and participate in all campus life. Nobody knows who is freshman connection. In the end, it was a great way to transition to college as the classes are much smaller and they have better supports. DD ended up with all As that year and had fantastic instructors. She had no issue transferring into her LEP major. |
My daughter's profile was similar and she was rejected outright last year. |
+1. Yes. My DD is from one of the Montgomery County “ W” schools. |
+1. Thank you for this nice response.

| At some schools Spring admission means Spring admissions. There is no disadvantage at Maryland other than the time of classes for one semester. Do not factor it in decision of whether to go to UMD just because there is a sting. If it is first choice, consider it a win and celebrate!!! |
Many schools do this. Some have their own programs for the kids in the fall that are required (think NEU the NUIn/NU Global scholars or NUBOund) , others you just have the option to take classes elsewhere. Yes, it "games the rankings" a bit, but really it's about backfilling the slots of kids who drop out after fall semester. It's a guaranteed Transfer in program that ensures the college has enough students paying tuition come spring (and the next fall). It's not unique to UMD. |
RIght?!?! It's much better than other places where the student is NOT allowed on campus fall semester. AT UMD, the students live on campus, have the full college experience, can meet people outside of just the "Spring start kids". They just get to take their limited classes after 4pm (or whatever time). It's much better than a true spring start where you don't integrate into campus until January---when all the freshman have already made their friend groups. If your kid wants UMD and you want in-state tuition, it's an easy choice. |
NO They have very special dorms for these kids and they are insanely expensive. And this is a stupid program always has been. It has changed a little of the years . I would never let my kid do this. Penn State and UF do it better by starting kids in the summer. |
