Summer swim -- are we allowed to take a vacation?

Some teams start two-a-days next week. If you're not gaining, you're falling behind.

Really? I mean seriously? How does that work and what teams do that? It is high school season, where is the time?

I'm guessing (hoping) sarcasm.

Definitely sarcasm.

That’s ridiculous. If anything there will be parents glad their kid then has a chance at A meets. We had club kids skip meets for PVS LC meets and no one looked sideways at those kids.

I would guess a mix of both - some parents happy their kids get to make the A meet and/or relay team, but some who are disappointed because it hurts the team in a close meet. For the kids, a big part of summer swim, and what makes it fun, is the team aspect. There is a lot more cheering for each other and caring how your teammates perform. Compared to winter swim, where everyone is just swimming for themselves with almost no team aspect. And like any team sport, when an important player is missing, it hurts the team.

You are most definitely allowed to take a vacation whenever you want. Depending on your team, they may or may not be upset about your taking a vacation in the middle of the season. It varies widely within the league.

On the other hand, you may want to consider if your kids will be upset missing things like the relay carnival, A-meets etc during the season. I’ve seen newer parents end up changing vacation plans at the last minute because their kid begged to stay for the all-star relays. If your kids are not fast swimmers, they would not qualify anyway. So take that into account. We tend to do shorter vacations and leave after a Saturday meet and back before the next one and plan around other events during the swim season. Mainly because it’s fun and the kids love it all and don’t want to miss it.

I think the only people mad are the parents who care, and that is not a very large number. My kids have been doing summer swim for years at a pool that is in the top few divisions and I can only come of with a handful of parents who I've ever heard care about meet outcomes

Our team relies on my swimmer for Saturday duel meets and the relay carnivals but Divisionals/All Stars is just for individual "achievement" and in all honestly not as fun as all the other meets during the season so we are taking this year off.

Divisionals is different than All Stars...[/quote

No kidding. You have to swim at Divisionals to qualify for All Stars..we are skipping both this summer. If your kid is really good the team relies on them being there through the last Saturday A meet but after that Divisionals and All Stars are not team events so easy to miss.

PVS LC meets were always on a different day than summer swim meets last year. They did that intentionally so they wouldn’t screw up summer swim.

The last Saturday meet conflicted with PVS LC champs. The 2 PVS LC Opens were on Sundays only, but there were other PVS LC meets that happened on Saturdays and Sundays.

Are you thinking of All-Stars? I know that conflicted with the LC championship

12U LC champs were July 14-17, the last summer team meet was July 16.

But it was local and Saturday events didn’t start until 3pm, intentionally well after NVSL meets would end. Events the other days started in the morning. Our club had a few swimmers going to the PV meet, but all first went to the NVSL meet in the morning

We were one of the families that did both. Depending on your events, you could only do both if you left NVSL early. There was no way to do both and make the warm up for the LC meet, inc eating lunch and driving there. For us, we stayed through backstroke but missed all other events and relays. Many good swimmers had the same issue, however so it probably evened out most teams.

That’s great for your summer team, I guess? We had club kids miss meets for club swimming events. It was not a big deal at all. The summer swim obsession in this area is wild, it’s a 6-8 week no-cut rec sport for crying out loud.

For us, it's the kid who is the one obsessed. The fun of summer swim meets - and the encouragement from the other kids, especially the older ones - are what drives him to improve. At least from our experience, club swim is not a very social activity or young boys, and the meets can seem long and boring.

Our summer pool asks families that have Ameet swimmers to not vacation until the season is over but it can’t be enforced

That is just ridiculous, although I don’t doubt that it’s true.
