Summer swim -- are we allowed to take a vacation?

Anonymous
Ironically my kids always did the best the week we returned after vacation. It’s an intense 6-8 weeks and the rest did them well when they were young.

I understand OP. People are insane here about it.

you are 'allowed' to take a vacation. You might want to try and look at your team's social calendar from last summer- I know my kids would be bummed to miss some of the particularly fun social events- they would care less about missing a meet
Also- if you are a NVSL team, the season really ends July 22nd with divisionals- and for some teams it kind of ends July 15th with the last dual meet. If you went on vacation the last weekend of July, you are unlikely to be missing anything- that week just involves the small amount of kids who are going to all-stars. The week of July 15th- typically just the kids going to divisionals would be practicing (also a much smaller amount of kids)- but at least for our team, we have a fun meet at the beginning of the week and our team banquet on the 22nd so even though the kids are not going to practice, they would rather not be out of town.

The divisionals point is a good one. Our team only lets kids who are available for both divisionals and all stars swim in the divisional meet, because divisionals is the only meet that can be used to qualify for all stars. If a kid swims in divisionals but then can't come to all stars they are taking a spot from a kid who might have been able to do both. Those meets are generally last two weeks of July. Not a concern if your kids are pretty new to swimming. If they end up being really good you can just sit out divisionals this year and plan around it for next summer.

There are always 2 alternates for All-Stars.

Right but if you sign up for divisional knowing you won’t be able to swim in all stars, you deny someone on your own team the chance to swim in divisionals and potentially make it to all stars. Being sick or having something come up unexpectedly is obviously different. Our team just asks that you let the next kid on the ladder take the spot if you know you’re going on vacation when the all star meet is happening.

This is really only an issue at top tier pools who have many kids with the potential to make all stars. That’s not the case at most nvsl pools.

We are skipping Divisionals/All Stars this year in order to go on vacation. Our team relies on my swimmer for Saturday duel meets and the relay carnivals but Divisionals/All Stars is just for individual "achievement" and in all honestly not as fun as all the other meets during the season so we are taking this year off.

Does this set a record for earliest summer swim thread?

Some teams start two-a-days next week. If you're not gaining, you're falling behind.

This, FFS.

Yes, thank you. OP, book your vacation. People are nuts about summer swimming here.

If your kids aren't good, you can take a vacation. If your kids are good, expect people to give you the side eye if you skip meets.

Really? I mean seriously? How does that work and what teams do that? It is high school season, where is the time?

I'm guessing (hoping) sarcasm.

That’s ridiculous. If anything there will be parents glad their kid then has a chance at A meets. We had club kids skip meets for PVS LC meets and no one looked sideways at those kids.
