Summer swim -- are we allowed to take a vacation?

We were one of the families that did both. Depending on your events, you could only do both if you left NVSL early. There was no way to do both and make the warm up for the LC meet, inc eating lunch and driving there. For us, we stayed through backstroke but missed all other events and relays. Many good swimmers had the same issue, however so it probably evened out most teams.

My kid also swam both, but did not miss any events. Swam the last event of the meet, actually (a relay). We are in a different league, though.

That’s great for your summer team, I guess? We had club kids miss meets for club swimming events. It was not a big deal at all. The summer swim obsession in this area is wild, it’s a 6-8 week no-cut rec sport for crying out loud.

That's part of what makes it fun. All the kids in the family can do it, on the same team. 8 year olds are as important to the team as 18 year olds. And yeah... people care how the team does, because it's dumb to spend so much time practicing for something and then just blow it off.

The kids could care less if a teammate misses a meet because of another commitment, be it a vacation or a club meet, it’s a weird parent thing. Adults should not care so much about a 2 month long rec sport.

Same. It can be disheartening for close relays. Maybe if you’re at one of the Division 1 pools it’s not such a drop to bring in the 5th fastest swimmer but for a lot of other polls it is. Kids do get upset for losses they feel they should have won.

My kid was sad to lose her relay teammate for a vacation.

The other kid is probably sad that they go to meets and have to just watch their age group teem mates swim the second half

I'm sure she was but put this in real perspective. It can be an intense and emotional season but it's a summer activity. There is no money involved. This is not the state championships where kids' college scholarships are on the line. Most kids on most teams never swim those A meets. Most families do not prioritize summer swim above all else.

These kids all deserve the best possible summer, and sometimes that might mean a family vacation, an amazing sleepaway camp or something else trumps summer swim. They have 12yrs' worth of summers to participate. It's okay if they miss a week.

This is an apples and oranges comparison, at least in MCSL. An A meet is no different than a B meet in terms of participation, unlike the way a basketball scrimmage is different than a basketball game. The B meets are against another pool, so it’s still a competition not just a scrimmage. That’s what makes summer swim a good rec sport, everyone gets a chance to compete . I don’t understand the obsession with A meets v B meets, why would a kid that is not fast enough want to get thrown into an A meet where they will come in last place?

If it’s a top team like Chesterbrook, Overlee, or Tuckahoe and your kid qualifies for A meets they will likely give you a hard time about vacations. If your kid doesn’t qualify for A meets they likely will not care (and in the case of my kids not even know who your kids are).

Part of it is the culture that NVSL board has created. It is rigid, very rigid. They act like they are USAswimming when they are not. I love when we are up against teams with cheering coaches that act goofy. But I have heard coaches chastise other coaches for acting that way. Also I think that NoVa adds to it but I don't hear the same complaints in the Colonial League.
