Youngkin asks Miyares to investigate Fairfax County high school leadership after reports test scores withheld, preventing scholarship opportunities.

RICHMOND, Va. (DC News Now) — Gov. Glenn Youngkin asked Virginia’s attorney general to look into reports that a high school in Fairfax County withheld information from more than 1,000 students that they could have used in order to apply for college scholarships.

Youngkin called on Jason Miyares to investigate allegations that Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology didn’t provide information about National Merit Awards, as determined by PSAT scores, until after deadlines for college scholarships passed.

“We need to get to the bottom of what appears to be an egregious, deliberate attempt to disadvantage high-performing students at one of the best schools in the country,” Youngkin said in a news release Tuesday. “Parents and students deserve answers and Attorney General Miyares will initiate a full investigation. I believe this failure may have caused material harm to those students and their parents, and that this failure may have violated the Virginia Human Rights Act.”

Youngkin made the request of Miyares in a letter dated Jan. 3, 2023.

Maybe the result of this investigation is a conclusion that it’s time to close TJ. That would be a good outcome. We 100% don’t need that school and the headaches and inequities it represents.

Ridiculous that we should close a school that attracts the best academic talent. Let there be somewhere those with high intelligence, hard work and the ability to be tested and hand in homework with actual due dates, can attend.

Are you seriously contending students with these attributes cannot already be found in large numbers at other schools? If so, you are delusional.

You want TJ as a special accolade for some snowflakes but it has become too divisive and detrimental to the operation of FCPS as a whole. Imagine the possibilities if it became a neighborhood school again and we didn’t have to listen to the Coalition for TJ and TJAAG constantly bickering with each other or regularly triggering federal and state investigations.

Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin formally directed the state’s attorney general Jason Miyares to investigate allegations of academic discrimination at Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria on Tuesday.

Youngkin’s request comes in response to a series of reports which suggest that school administrators delayed the announcement of National Merit commendations for Asian students as part of a racial-equity push.

Yes, we call those private schools. There is no valid reason taxpayer dollars should continue to fund a school like TJ.

Of all the things to waste taxpayer resources on, delayed commendation letters is where we are now. Very interesting that Youngkin only seems concerned about schools in NoVa. I’m sure SWVA schools have no issues at all. This administration is a complete joke!

Parents rally outside of Thomas Jefferson High School after AG investigation requested.

VIRGINIA (DC News Now) — On Tuesday evening, several parents rallied outside Thomas Jefferson High School in protest of the school’s actions — and in support of the ensuing investigation.

Then, Fairfax County Superintendent Michelle Reid held a town hall inside the school’s library. The first-year superintendent answered questions and listened to comments from parents and students.

Someone needs to get a big fine and jailed for this, if not outright fired. Messing up kids futures like this is just flat out WRONG!

Closing TJ should not lead to defunding public schools so the rich like Youngkin (and McAuliffe) sending their kids to privates get yet another break. It means disrupting the narrative that only a single public school in FCPS matters. #CloseTJHSST

And it’s very telling how they have zero qualms using kids as pawns.

Once again, the only people “concerned” about this issue are people who have been attacking FCPS for two years, some of whom are running for school board. This article cites Yashar and Miller, both people who have been attacking FCPS publicly for years over anything. The other parents didn’t care and students didn’t care. Other articles cite Nomani and Jackson, both right wingers who have been trying to make political hay by attacking schools. This is manufactured outrage and, as a parent of TJ alums who loved their time at TJ, I am sorry for the kids there who keep being dragged into political fights.

Even if FCPS can't close it, the can pull an Arlington and withdraw the county. There is nothing about the school that is worth the time and attention that it receives. Let Loudon and Prince William have it.

Just because some people get more publicity than others doesn’t mean others don’t share their concerns. Look at how many followers Nomani has now and how many likes her posts get. Sounds like Little, Hayes, Lei, Torrico etc are just resentful that their hypocritical ramblings about “equity” (aka “elitism on our terms”) don’t resonate with the public.

I hope the hammer comes down on the Racist Individuals and not just the "School System" as an entity.

I'm just utterly dumbfounded school leaders could have such hate towards students for being a good student.
