Reading is fundamental. "The investigation will examine if the administration’s decision to withhold National Merit Scholarship honors from students and the school’s new admissions policies violate the VHRA." "My office will also investigate whether [TJ's] admissions policies violate the Virginia Human Rights Act." https://www.oag.state.va.us/media-center/news-releases/2520-january-04-2023-attorney-general-miyares-launches-civil-rights-investigation-into-thomas-jefferson-high-school-for-science-and-technology https://files.constantcontact.com/d3e83e11901/535c8d59-c909-4761-9e4d-4cd6dfbb9604.pdf?rdr=true |
By the time an investigation is completed, whatever desired finding is reached, it goes to court, goes through trials, and appeals... we'll have a new attorney general. Even if he wins, FCPS can just withdraw from the school and be done with it |
They do. When PSAT scores come out the year before on Collage Board, you can look up how to calculate the index score that National Merit Scholar derives to make the decisions. When the decision for what the index for 1% and 3% is decided on for all states, it is public ally published and has the info by state. I guarantee every single parent in TJ knew exactly where there kid stood long before the certificates happened. |
+1 The 800 scholarships are the corporate special scholarships. Those are open to any non-finalist, including semifinalists, commended, and non-commended. Applicants have to meet the specific criteria (children of employee, etc) to be considered. Students already had info on how to apply and knew their status. Deadline for scholarship applications was 12/15/22. More than a month after the certificates were handed out. |
What in the WORLD are you talking about? While some people are mad about TJ changing admission and working to make the school a more enjoyable supportive place to attend, the investigation and “wrong doing” here literally equate to someone forgetting to hand out on time certificates that many TJ students themselves say would not normally be included on a TJ kid’s college application due to typical TJ kids having other higher awards to list in limited space. And these awards are handed out each year to the kids - as they were this year once TJ realized the oversight. ALL “commended” kids at the school - not just Asian ones - were impacted the same by this delay of a few weeks in the normal process. Your rant makes zero sense in the context of those facts. |
Attorney General Miyares Launches Civil Rights Investigation into Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
RICHMOND, VA – Attorney General Jason Miyares today announced that his Office of Civil Rights will be investigating Fairfax County Public Schools and the administration of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (“TJHSST”) for unlawful discrimination in violation of the Virginia Human Rights Act (“VHRA”). The investigation will examine if the administration’s decision to withhold National Merit Scholarship honors from students and the school’s new admissions policies violate the VHRA. “No student should be treated differently because of their race. Students at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology are amongst the brightest in the nation, yet some have been punished in the name of ‘equity.’ Racism and race-based government decision making in any form is wrong and unlawful under Virginia’s Human Rights Act,” said Attorney General Miyares. “The controversial admissions policies at TJHSST, which have significantly decreased the amount of Asian American students enrolled in recent years, is another example of students being treated differently because of their ethnicity. My Office of Civil Rights will investigate any potential violations of the law and vindicate the civil rights of these students and their families.” Read the letter here. |
So what if they find it has. Given that FCPS has won so far in the courts on this wouldn’t they win a legal challenge of the VA AG’s findings?
My kid is a freshman. I just hope this takes long enough to play out that the current approach of making TJ a more humane place to attend school survives while she is there. I doubt my younger will want to attend. |
Given what a total mess FCPS has made of TJ in recent years, and how much more attention it seems to get than the other 197 schools and centers in FCPS combined, ending TJ as a selective magnet may make the most sense. I'm sure the kids who have to cross both 395 and 495 to get to Edison now would benefit from having a school where that wasn't required, and it would give FCPS an opportunity to revisit the Annandale/Falls Church/Woodson/Lake Braddock boundaries as well. |
A district court ruled AGAINST FCPS; that ruling is currently on appeal to the Fourth Circuit. And a federal decision that the changes at TJ didn't violate the U.S. Constitution wouldn't preclude a finding that they violated a state statute, as they operate independently. States can confer rights not conferred under the Fourteenth Amendment. |
Who got a participation trophy under the circumstances? These kids already knew their test score, which is the sole criteria for a commendation. Nothing was withheld, it was simply a delay in hand delivering a a piece of paper, which is just a small formality. Nobody’s future was truly affected by this administrative snafu. Certainly no case for discrimination or human rights violations will succeed. I predict this will be as successful as Youngkin’s teacher reporting email hotline. |
Not to mention the Loudoun investigation, which was a complete bust |
Hello FCPS Students, Families, and Community,
You may be aware that Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) and Fairfax County Public Schools are now the subject of a Commonwealth of Virginia Attorney General investigation. Last month, we were made aware that there had been a delay in sharing National Merit Scholarship Corporation recognition with TJHSST students designated as Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. After learning of this delay, impacted students and their families were notified, and staff sent emails and made follow-up calls to colleges where these students had applied to inform them of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation commendations. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has initiated an investigative review by an independent third party into the circumstances surrounding this situation. Our current understanding is that the delay at TJHSST this fall was a unique situation due to human error, but we will leave it to our investigative review to draw any final conclusions. We are committed to sharing any key findings and any updates to our processes to ensure future consistency in appropriate and timely notification of National Merit Scholarship Corporation recognitions going forward. In addition, the Virginia Attorney General investigation will include a review of the TJHSST admissions policies. FCPS stands ready to work with our partners at the state level on both areas of investigation. I have already communicated this to the Office of the Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia. We understand and value the hard work and dedication of each and every student, and the families and staff who support them. Please be assured that we remain resolutely committed to supporting every student in reaching their unique and fullest potential. Sincerely, Michelle Reid, Ed.D. Superintendent Fairfax County Public Schools |
Asra 100% knew that her child was not in the NMSF camp, but was instead in Commended. I cannot believe that so many on the right are falling for this package of lies. |
The AG is clueless. Youngkin is scraping some brownie points.
This will pass, like other attempts to tarnish the efforts to enhance the TJ experience.. |
There are more women than men in this world. By your logic, women cannot be discriminated against? You are probably ok with colonialism as well. How could the majority in these countries be victims? Look at their numbers? |
