"Approximately 63% (n=2,483) of teachers in the study reported SRO presence in their school buildings. Results of the current study suggest that teachers positively associate SRO presence with feelings of safety and security, but they perceive students to be more fearful and less secure in buildings employing SROs." https://edsource.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/01-The-Influence-of-School-Resource-Officer-Presence-on-Teacher-Perceptions-of-School-Safety-and-.pdf |
The kids are getting their information from social media, so their fear has nothing to do with reality. |
Parkland had SROs. Two things are true: All cops are bastards (and shouldn’t be around our children). And most of them are cowards and useless in a shooting like this (see Parkland). |
The reality is that they are fearful, regardless of whether you think that fear is justified. And that does not make for a good learning environment. |

I don’t think this would have made any difference. Look at another local school shooting at Edmund Burke in NW DC. The security guard was one of the first people shot and he was lucky to even survive at all. His presence didn’t deter a maniac in a sniper’s nest.
Why aren’t we addressing the fact that MCPS secondary schools are WAY too big to meet the needs of students in the first place. |
MCPS didn’t eliminate the SROs, MoCo county council/exec did. The SROs are police officers and work for the county. The arrangement was a partnership, but the decision was not MCPS’s. (I think the lawsuit is suing the wrong entity.) |
Then the county council and exec should be recalled and removed from office. Next, elect competent county leaders who will keep our kids safe! |
| I work in PGCPS. We have a SRO. Do I feel safer? Hell to the no. I do not trust that old, fat guy to save my life or the life of a student. |
Council is following the research on what works and what doesn’t. Pretty happy with them…. |

Why do businesses hire off-duty police if they are useless then? I've seen them at nightclubs and at some stores (for example Apple store in Bethesda).
Based on what I've read here about SROs in MCPS, having a police officer on site is no deterrent, and has no affect on safety. I guess all those businesses are just wasting their money! |
The difference is that a school is a contained community. In any other place the people you’re with are strangers and there is an inherent fear and distrust. This doesn’t work in an environment like a school where you need to be around the same people and trust them. If instead of working to build the trust you put in an officer, you’re just sowing more distrust rather than improving the school climate. |
I sincerely hope this is some next level trolling. If so, bravo! https://wtop.com/montgomery-county/2022/11/gold-gun-gold-getaway-car-2-arrested-after-armed-robbery-at-bethesda-row-apple-store/#:~:text=The%20Apple%20store%20robbery%20happened,gold%20slide%20and%20extended%20magazine. https://www.fox5dc.com/news/couple-who-robbed-bethesda-apple-store-arrested |
1. Actually, most security guards at retail establishments are ineffective. 2. Retail establishments hire security guards to prevent theft, not protect people. Not at all the same thing. |
| None of this navel gazing is relevant. The family is suing whatever entity has money with whatever reason the attorneys felt had legal teeth so the family can get a payout. That’s it. If the shooter had come from a wealthy family they’d be suing them, too, but they’re not. My heart goes out to the victim and his family and I hope they get every penny they seek. Because at my core, I know in an emergency, all students are only as safe as they are lucky. Not just in schools but literally everywhere with our gun violence problem in this country. |
I agree with almost everything you said, except the bolded. Why do you think they should get every penny that they seek? |
