Montgomery County should not have defunded school resource officers.
Now one student will spend most of his adult life in prison. Worse for you, your school system has to pay out millions to defend (and likely settle) a lawsuit by the family of a shooting victim, all because of Montgomery County's foolish decision: https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/local/maryland/maryland-gun-violence-former-student-sentenced-after-shooting-15-year-old-classmate-at-montgomery-county-high-school/65-5431a3f5-7a46-49f5-a421-03a66cc2578f From that article: " In November, the mother sued MCPS, saying the lack of school resource police officers was partially to blame for her son’s life-threatening injuries." If you live in MoCo, demand a return to sanity, and the restoration of school resource officers immediatly. If your county politicians are outside of MoCo, and are considering eliminating school resource officers, demand they abandon such foolish ideas. Keep our kids safe! |
| There’s no evidence that even if there were an SRO in the building that this incident would not have happened. In fact there is very little evidence SROs prevent school violence. But there is evidence they increase fear and increase disparities in school discipline. No SROs in MCPS. They made the right decision. |
Every single principal in MCPS was in favor of SROs. Why not trust them instead of making guesses about what's best for their school? |
Just because people think something works doesn’t make it true. Of course principals wanted someone else in a building they could blame if something goes wrong. It takes the responsibility of actually making schools a safe and supportive place away…. |
| This case might settle because people settle dubious cases all the time, but it would be highly inappropriate for a court to find liability for what's essentially a political decision. Our elected officials get to decide if we have police in schools, not a single lawsuit. |
That’s a really craven view of principals. I personally think most principals are in it for the right reasons (even if they are not always the best administrators in the world), and want the best for their student bodies. |
Could you please provide some data and studies indicating schools with SROs are safer and have fewer students injuries? |
They don’t want SROs because they think SROs prevent school shootings. They want SROs to handle medium-level behavioral issues so they don’t have to. |
This! Students testified about the fact that SROs made them feel unsafe. |
Number of shootings on MCPS campus when SROs were there: 0 Number of shootings on MCPS campus after SROs were removed: 1 |
Tell that to the kids who were present for the Parkland shooting. |
And principals have testified they feel SROs make them feel safe, plus they make the schools safer in their experience. WHo has more experience? Adult pricipals, or little kids whose parents put them up to testifying for political reasons? |
I mean, if kids are buying ghost guns online and taking them to school to escalate disputes … what do you think the answer is? |
I don’t believe this is representative for a second. Kind of like how white leftists claim that black people don’t want policing… when in fact surveys say they do. |
Basic statistics…. Correlation is not causation. |
