Why do businesses hire off-duty police if they are useless then? I've seen them at nightclubs and at some stores (for example Apple store in Bethesda). Based on what I've read here about SROs in MCPS, having a police officer on site is no deterrent, and has no affect on safety. I guess all those businesses are just wasting their money!
The difference is that a school is a contained community. In any other place the people you’re with are strangers and there is an inherent fear and distrust. This doesn’t work in an environment like a school where you need to be around the same people and trust them. If instead of working to build the trust you put in an officer, you’re just sowing more distrust rather than improving the school climate.
