2 hurricanes within 2 months - why live in Florida?

Yeah, my parents live down there. I took the kids to visit maybe half a dozen times during the pandemic to get away from this depressing, shutdown area. DeSantis reopened the schools while our kids here were stuck in virtual. It was like night and day, and a lot of people from up north voted with their feet.

I have a t-shirt that says "Make America Florida." My Arlington neighbors give me their best squinty-faced scowl when they see it.

Your shirt might as well say, "Avoid me, I'm intolerant and nuts."

I live in Florida and avoid people who wear those sorts of shirts.

I may be nuts, but unlike most left-wing people in the DC area, I'm not intolerant of differing opinions.

Right?

Florida is awful. It’s a terrible place. It’s torture being there. And if you’re a lib from the northeast, you definitely should listen to everyone trashing Florida abd take their advice and NEVER come here. All the bad stuff you’ve heard is true. Save yourselves! Stay in NY where it’s safe.

I have relatives that live there. Been there many times. Trust me, we don't want to live there. It's like an endless, flat, New Jersey strip mall and that strip mall is sweltering in summer. Thunderstorms and hurricanes. Corrupt government. Stupid voters.

Thanks, no thanks.

Ha ha ha. The left is comprised of tons of different opinions. That's why the Dems have it so tough. So many constituencies. Fla is full on red now and full of RWNJs who are focused on imaginary social issue bogie men and hanging on tight to their 100 guns while their kids are gunned down in schools.

Give me a break.

I find it vapid and dull. DeSantis will further ruin education for already terrible schools.

I lived in Florida several years, went for work for three weeks and visited twice a year for decades to see family. I’ve been all over and it’s mostly a big shopping mall with lots of elderly people. 😎

Just stop. Climate change cannot be linked to any particular storm. This year has not had a lot of storms. 2 a year in Floriday is not a lot. 1901 there were 4. Can't blame that on climate change. This is a very normal/average year. Climate change not really likely to impact Florida that much in any event.

Wait, are you kidding? Climate change is already affecting Florida a lot. It's going to devastate a lot of the state. We're like 90 percent coastline here! This is nothing but one example - but I live in Tampa Bay too and there are people in my non-flood zone neighborhood who've moved here from the beach because they are worried about increasing severity and number of storms.

This year Ian was horrific, devastating - and Nicole is mostly NBD. At least where I am. It's been a rainy, windy day.

You need to learn more about actual storm data, and not get your weather information from Don Lemon. No, climate change is not already affecting Florida a lot.

Oh give it a rest. All of us living in hurricane zones know we live in hurricane zones. Y’all get some wild winter storms, tornados, and still hurricanes up there too.

IKR? It's like a DCUM hobby, insulting, disparaging and mischaracterizing Florida when they get tired of attacking their inlaws.

Over 500 earthquakes in the past month. Why live in California?

I wouldn't live there, and it has nothing to do with climate change and mostly tondo with politics! Lots of people like the low taxes. But for me, I wouldn't do it because:
-too hot and too humid (and I like living in a climate that has 4 distinct seasons)
-the public schools are awful
-the population (intolerant of others, esp LGBTQ+) is not a group of people I want to be around

I’m a Floridian amused by these posts. Punching down at Florida must make people feel better about living in the DMV for some reason.

I like: outdoor hobbies like boating and golfing that I can’t do in DC for much of the year; proximity to amazing beaches and theme parks; no state income tax; the laid back lifestyle; and the fact that you can actually buy a nice, well built house in FL for the cost of an ugly split level built cheaply in 1970 in NOVA, among other things. I also hate dealing with months of cold/ice/snow and the sun setting at 4:45.

You learn to live with the storms, and they’re generally not a big deal if you live inland. You can also evacuate from a hurricane. I don’t know that I could live in a place with wildfires like parts of CO or on a fault like like coastal CA. I understand that people have different preferences than me, though, and that most people wouldn’t want to leave a place that is “home” to them.
