Why on earth shouldn't he apologize to her (or anyone) in private? He doesn't owe *you* an apology.

| His performance campaigning for Republicans this election cycle doesn’t seem too promising for his political future. So many of the candidates he campaigned for lost - Yesli Vega, Hung Cao, Paul LePage, Tudor Dixon, Heidi Ganahl, Tim Michels. Arizona isn’t decided yet, but it’s not looking good for Kari Lake. |
It's not about sending an anonymous mom an apology, it's about sending a message to his base that his (and their) behavior is abhorrent, unacceptable, and incompatible with a civil society. |

Poor Youngkin. He is so 2021. The darling of the Republicans is solidly Desantis. I predict all hands on deck are falling behind Desantis, his photogenic family, and his ability to go against Trump.
Youngkin’s wishy washy ways and not affirmatively going against Trumpisms are going to hurt him. I am not a Desantis fan at all. But that’s my take. Youngkin has jumped the shark. |
He had no problem mocking her in public. |
The voters seem to have done that for him. |
Anyone who studies this issue for more than the five minutes it takes to read a right-wing think piece realizes that while it may not [always] be the intent, in practice, that's exactly what it does. Look at DCPS - they have no ability to divest themselves of costly infrastructure housing an increasing smaller and higher-needs student population, and it's not as if any extra cash for bussing and classroom supports is going to materialize. Meanwhile, charter schools can and do turn down or kick out special needs students regularly, go years without being held to meaningful progress standards, and drive down teacher quality and retention by relying on Teach for America-type programs and provisional licensure. I am 100% a champion for public school reform but our late-stage capitalism hellscape is not the agent to make it happen. |
I think the bolded are quite related. Youngkin was the rare candidate who was elected in 2021 vs 2022 and in 2021 there was still masking, school closures, etc. I think he was aided very nicely by the timing of promising (and delivering) to make sure schools opened (although most were by that point) and stayed that way with no masking. Parents were pretty pushed over the edge by that point. I also think the prior point of McAuliffe being an awful candidate was pretty spot on as well. Kind of like Christ in FL. People voted for them because they were Dems and they didn't like the opponent but they weren't convincing tons of people to vote who otherwise would not have. |
| last year was a blip...and our former gov made a HORRIBLE gaffe that never should have happened for someone who should be a savvy campaigner. Embarrassing |

I think the Dems actively lost that one - and Fetterman is the playbook.
-Play for 5 points in every single county. The dems just fully conceded rural areas and paid the price. -Mcauliffe was a terrible, boring, sterile, establishment, do-over candidate - nothing there to get excited about or turn anyone on. -This all let Youngkin get away with being two different things in two different parts of the state - vest wearing soccer dad up here, Trumpy christian nationalist in rural VA. -Astroturf organizing on school issues, etc. - Dems are WAY behind (and the years of school closures played into it... they are trying to recreate that vibe on the woke issues) |
+1 Public disgrace calls for public apology. Just shows how spineless he is. |
Spirit of Virginia, right? What a toad. |
I beg to differ. Considering that the likes of Hung Cao and Yesli Vega received even a single vote, the message was not nearly loud enough. |
Thank you for this post! You summarized the critical issues much more succinctly than I would have been able to do. |
+1 The political press was positively desperate for a successful Republican who wasn’t Trumpy, so they thought, and they basically made him with their drooling coverage. And McAuliffe was a boring known quantity. |
