“Police said the teens were released to their parents under “community detention” – an alternative to incarceration in which minors stay at home under supervision. It sometimes includes electronic monitoring.”

Is this really how we should be handling these cases? Curious to hear others’ opinions.

It sounds like the parents weren't doing a good job controlling their 14 year olds in the first place. Why will they do better this time?

Why is the judicial system okay with people pointing guns at others? Have you ever had a gun pointed at you during a crime?

Exactly. 11 AM on a Tuesday and they were committing felony assault and car jacking with a gun instead of being in school.

Clearly safer for the rest of the kids in school that these fine young scholars were not present.

At least they were civic minded enough to take public transit to Rockville. Making good use of DCs Kids Ride Free program. They should be commended.

Every stereotype about conservatives being too dumb to read is 100 percent true. This happened in Rockville, MD which is a different legal system than DC.

Since you appear to be quite literal, let me rephrase the PP's statement so that you can understand it better. Every ridiculous stereotype of liberals being soft on crime and criminals is 100 percent true in cities across the US.

Let us know if the big words are giving you trouble.

It’s literally legal to shoot people (stand your ground) in other states. Nice tough on Crime BS.

As it should be. If someone is robbing you by force, or your home, you have every right to use lethal force as a countermeasure.
This is just common sense.

That’s not his stand your ground work , you can literally have a parking space situation and shooting is legal. Or be walking to your dads with skittles and a hoodie and be shot legally.

The murder rate in red states is way higher than any liberal state. Also, let’s talk suicide by gun in red states.

You need to be defending yourself from death or serious injury. The problem with states that don’t have stand your ground laws is it increases the chances that someone legitimately defending themselves will be charged with murder because an overzealous prosecutor can play Monday morning quarterback and argue you could have fled. In many self defense shootings the victim has 1-2 seconds to react. Placing the burden of retreating on the victim will increase the likelihood that victims of crime will attempt to run away when it’s not in their best interest and could lead to them getting killed. The burden should not be on the victim to run away, the burden should be on the violent thug to not threaten someone’s life. That’s the point of stand your ground.

+1. Plus it’s just a deterrent. Criminals need to know that if you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes, and they should be scared for their life every time they try to commit a criminal act.

I personally feel that being grounded is a little light for carjacking. But the people making criminal justice policies care much more about the offenders than their victims, so that’s just how it’s going to be. Watch your back, the government does not give a crap about crime victims.

This is why I moved to Virginia. When we catch car jackets we throw them in the Onion. Or shoot them dead because we stand our ground in this state.

Until it's someone you care about who's victimized.

No. They don't. Even though it's usually the marginalized communities they purport to help.

The recividism rate for youths in community detention is a lotttt lower than youth held in confinement facilities. Prisons & jails just make things worse.

The should have at least been held the maximum 72 hours before arraignment. This is a very serious offense and thankfully Maryland is not DC. There’s no Youth Offenders Act that will give them a slap on the wrist.

Agree. They are still children, and they need an immediate consequence. They should be put on a rocket docket and tried ASAP.

I agree with you and I’m pretty socially liberal. I simply don’t get this stuff. This self flagellating approach to tackling crime. As if it should be allowed because sold folks had it rough and so they’re owed this layer of protection when they cause violent crime. Honestly, legalize drugs. Legalize prostitution. But if you attack someone, I’m sorry but you need to be taken off the streets.

It’s the same thing with education. If it’s too hard, progressive liberals just want to lower the bar to let people pass. Where does it end? I hate Fox News. I think it’s comically lopsided toward right wing idiocy (they even dumb down the style of reporting to use less big words), but I can feel myself agreeing with the newspaper on these crime related stories. Whether it was that situation in Brooklyn where the ladies dog was killed and she had urine thrown on her. Or reading about Chesa Boudin and other progressive liberal das…where does all this “woke” nonsense lead? To a less safe, less well educated America.

Good for not deterring crime. Yeah, Baltimore will be safer because of this.

According to DCUM standards, you are a “closeted MAGA republican trumpist” for speaking out against democratic policies. Just FYI.
