https://bethesdamagazine.com/2022/10/04/three-d-c-teens-charged-with-attempted-armed-carjacking-in-rockville/ “Police said the teens were released to their parents under “community detention” – an alternative to incarceration in which minors stay at home under supervision. It sometimes includes electronic monitoring.” Is this really how we should be handling these cases? Curious to hear others’ opinions.
The recividism rate for youths in community detention is a lotttt lower than youth held in confinement facilities. Prisons & jails just make things worse.
The should have at least been held the maximum 72 hours before arraignment. This is a very serious offense and thankfully Maryland is not DC. There’s no Youth Offenders Act that will give them a slap on the wrist.
Agree. They are still children, and they need an immediate consequence. They should be put on a rocket docket and tried ASAP.
