Do you wear your good jewelry when you go out in the evening in DC?

Are you all dripping in diamonds at the Rockville Bonefish Grill, then?

Tell me you’re an amateur without telling me you’re an amateur.

Quoting myself. It seems like I am friends with overly paranoid old nervous middle age parents who use the dangers of DC as excuses to never go out anymore. DH and I am included in that group. I need to put on my jewelry and go out again. Maybe it’s time for all of us to venture out of the burbs.

Maybe the difference is that you never lived in DC? I lived all over DC (sometimes in sketchy parts) from the ages of 21 - 36 when we had our first child and decided to move out to the suburbs so I've always been very comfortable going out there, but also learned to be hyper-aware of my surroundings. Not sure I still have those instincts, but I'm also rarely going somewhere that's not a pretty popular part of town nowadays.

I usually wear fake jewelry even when I attend weddings in fancy places because our culture's love for real jewelry is well known and we become targets. I have heard people being robbed in the parking lots of fancy hotels where wedding celebrations are being held.

I’m South Asian also and live in DC, so I wear my jewelry everyday. Obviously not the overly ornate pieces, but still 22k and diamonds. I understand your safety concerns, but there is something sad about owning such beautiful jewelry and wearing fake pieces instead.

Same. I don't take real jewelry to out of town weddings though, I know too many people whose hotel rooms have been robbed. PP is right that the community does get targeted now.

I got mugged in NYC and they took my jewelry. So I don't wear my expensive jewelry if I am in crowds, Metro, walking late at night in DC or any city.

My Grandmother used to wear a 10 Carat emerald around DC when she would go out. At that size, most people didn’t even give it a second glance because it was so big they thought it was fake. That was back in the 80’s too.

So who has it now?

Yes. Anything I have of significant value is insured.

I wear nice jewelry out to dinner, etc. However, I worked downtown for over a decade in a place that totally emptied out at night. If I knew I was working late (10 or 11 or later), I didn’t wear any diamond rings. I don’t care if someone steals my stuff, but I didn’t want the interaction with any sketchballs. That’s why I don’t understand people who wear fakes when they are worried about getting mugged. Wouldn’t you rather wear nothing flashy at all, and not get mugged???

Also a suburbanite mom here and in my circle we do not discuss this and we would absolutely wear our jewelry into DC. I’m not going into neighborhoods where I would worry about it.

I do have a costume version of my engagement ring that I wear when we go to the beach or Europe. The beach because if the sand in the setting but I have multiple friends who have had issues with their jewelry in Europe- mugging, pickpocketing and people breaking into hotel rooms in very nice hotels.

Why on earth do you wear any jewelry to the beach?
