| I live in DC, so yes, of course I do. |
| Suburbanite mom here. We really do talk about how it’s not safe to go into DC these days! This thread is making me laugh and think about how much my 20 yo self would make fun of me now. |
| ^Im not OP |
Also a suburbanite mom here and in my circle we do not discuss this and we would absolutely wear our jewelry into DC. I’m not going into neighborhoods where I would worry about it. I do have a costume version of my engagement ring that I wear when we go to the beach or Europe. The beach because if the sand in the setting but I have multiple friends who have had issues with their jewelry in Europe- mugging, pickpocketing and people breaking into hotel rooms in very nice hotels. |
Other suburbanite mom here and nope, we don't talk about this, and yes, I wear my nice jewelry if we're going out to nice restaurants or to see a play or something. I mean, I'm not wearing diamonds to the 9:30 club or Anthem to see a show, but why shouldn't I wear my diamond earrings to Le Dip for a casual dinner? |
|
I wear my diamond earrings, wedding set and a diamond band on my left hand. It’s in total about 10k worth of jewelry on a daily basis.
I have some more expensive pieces that I only wear to weddings, galas, etc. |
| My what? |
| I have a lot of real 22K gold and diamond jewelry as I am South Asian. I usually wear fake jewelry even when I attend weddings in fancy places because our culture's love for real jewelry is well known and we become targets. I have heard people being robbed in the parking lots of fancy hotels where wedding celebrations are being held. |
| I live here, so….yes. I usually wear my engagement ring and 2 diamond wedding bands, my 1/2 carat diamond studs, and a gold watch I inherited daily. So that’s roughly $30k of jewelry. If we are going somewhere fancy (a gala, ha!) I’ll put in my inherited pearl and diamond drop earrings. Those are worth about $15k. |
|
I clearly move in different circles, because I am sure not wearing 30K worth of jewelry.
That said -- what is the point of having all that jewelry if you don't wear it? |
|
Of course. I live and work in DC and wear my nice jewelry all the time. Every day I wear my engagement ring and/or diamond wedding band + diamond stud earrings. Sometimes I wear my Cartier watch.
If I’m wearing my engagement ring on the metro or walking at night, I often flip the ring around so that the stone is against my palm. |
Quoting myself. It seems like I am friends with overly paranoid old nervous middle age parents who use the dangers of DC as excuses to never go out anymore. DH and I am included in that group. I need to put on my jewelry and go out again. Maybe it’s time for all of us to venture out of the burbs. |
| Yeah, it's just stuff. If someone wants it, they can have it. My life is more precious than any jewelry, regardless of price. That's what insurance is for anyway. |
| I do. I’m a suburban mom. I don’t worry at all about getting mugged; I worry about where I will find a parking space. |
I’m South Asian also and live in DC, so I wear my jewelry everyday. Obviously not the overly ornate pieces, but still 22k and diamonds. I understand your safety concerns, but there is something sad about owning such beautiful jewelry and wearing fake pieces instead. |
