DC asked people in jail how to stop gun violence

There may be learning disabilities, too. Not being able to function in society as a working adult makes things very hard - also not being able to use logic or reason well creates a chaotic life.

How about making prisoners attend classes and not be allowed out until they have completed at least the equivalent of an associate's degree? That is going to be their only chance for success.

This is probably one of the better ideas I've seen put forward. All the job programs, all of the skill and entrepreneurial training, all of it is a frustrating waste if they can't do basic arithmetic or comprehend what they're reading.

So, you're more invested in virtue signaling than stopping violent crime? Because people who care are going to look at problems from all angles.

DP

the ONLY people I care about, are victims.

We have a surplus of criminals, and they should be regarded as a disposable resource. Put them in prison and NEVER let them out. Or just execute them. Either is fine with me. But criminals aren’t an endangered species that need to be protected. They should be permanently excised from society.

This is the problem with progressives. They want to endlessly study the root causes of poverty, throw money at it, but not actually hold anyone accountable. Especially in this day and age with the reckoning of the last few years.

The city council will soon revise the dc criminal code so it’s “updated” (more lenient on penalties). They’ve already implemented such soft policies as the youth Rehabiliation act shielding violent criminals’ records until age 26. They’ve just started allowing folks with thousands of dollars of speeding tickets to be allowed to renew their drivers licenses in perpetuity without penalty, they don’t chase atv riders, there is no such thing as fare evasion, they hired at a cost of $9m last year “violence interruptors” which most studies show have no effect on preventing crime….the list is endless.

Rather than crack down, and incarcerate violent criminals to keep them off the streets, they double down on novel progressive policies, because apparently no one should be held accountable for their actions. Teens are let out when they commit gross acts of violence. Obviously, the statists are bad. Is leniency the answer? People will get away with what they think they can get away with.

We need to legalize all drugs and stop prosecuting non-violent drug offenses and prostitution. But if you car Jack someone or violently attack them we should not coddle you. I don’t care if you came from a single mother household, which is a massive percentage of those in DC, and were basically raised in the streets. It isn’t all society’s fault. You decided to attack that person and you should not get a music studio or get paid or whatever new tangled policy is drummed up by some consultant with a sociology degree.

They are asking people who are in jail for violent offenses. That's not holding them accountable?!

I doubt they’re taking the exercise seriously. It’s probably just an nice change for a day to get out of their cell, go to tell some sociologists what they want to hear (“my dad wasn’t around, we need more programs! Pay us to not commit crimes” etc.). They probably got to check out a few young interns and all in all a fun little dalliance from the daily monotony.

I am from SE dc. I know this city better than 99% of the people here. I was here during the Barry years. I am so over the city coddling criminals. I’m sorry half the city lives in essentially poverty. Many of the decisions people make either keep them in poverty or get them sent to jail. We should put more emphasis on helping tax payers and people who don’t commit crime than those who do.

I think your racist.

I think after seeing a constant pattern of stupid decisions about criminal policy in DC it’s fair for anyone to criticize what and how things are being done to combat crime.

What? What the fk are you talking about? I’m where. There are those in SE dc you know, right? Where are you from? Manassas? Do you live in dc? You probably have zero clue about constant package theft, rims getting stolen, people getting punched for their iPhones, or folks having to make sure no one jumps in their car when they park outside the elementary school to pick up their kids so a jacker doesn’t speed off with it, which was has happened multiple times in the last few years. Take yourself back to the burbs buddy.

Not that poster, but this is true. Remember that most of the victims are Black and brown. In the 80s and 90s, Black residents were screaming for more police and protection "and" social services and better housing and better schools. Know what they got? The police, but none of the other stuff. It requires both. And known, reliable, consistent consequences do reduce violent crime. Doesn't have to be overly punitive, like life for a robbery. But there must be known consequences. Build out all the rest of the supports, for sure. But don't stop policing just because that's a hashtag.

They'll have to learn a new way of life but they would not be allowed back out of the state

The good and decent people of Idaho and Montana don’t want your violent city criminal trash.

Better idea - fence off DC and let the criminals stay right where they are. You created them. YOU can deal with them.

Pps idea wint work but all the people in Idaho and montana aren't all upstanding citizens.

It’s interesting that you seem to associate any discussion of “crime” with “black people”.

That’s quite an insight into your character, wouldn’t you say?

? the criminals are being held accountable. That's why they are in prison.

Poverty + density breeds crime.

I think trying to understand why they turn to a life of crime and what could the city could do to reduce people turning to crime is smart. Better to address the root cause than simply put a big bandaid on top of the sore.

Law enforcement use criminal profiles to understand the criminal mind. Why is it not a good idea for the city to understand criminal minds, as well, so that they can get to the root of the issue.

I'm fairly certain most children don't wake up one day and decide to be a criminal. Most criminals turn to crime due to various reasons, and poverty and abuse at home are two big factors.

That being said, I don't think we should go easy on criminals, either. But, we can keep just jailing more people. 1. It's expensive to house prisonsers 2. we need workers in our society.

We have studied why people commit crimes for centuries. There are studies galore. Continuing to study it is basically a deflection of actually tackling the problem.

Here are some causes for crime to happen in young kids in dc: boredom, lead pipes, no dads around, single mom household, peer pressure, studying is frowned up on as uncool, stealing cars to joyride and post on Instagram, there are no consequences and dc keeps making it easier to commit crimes if there is no strict penalty, there ya go! That’s why we have crime. Study complete. Can we now arrest violent criminals? We have tons of summer programs and jobs programs and at risk programs and programs galore! So that’s another thing on your deflection checklist that you can’t fall back on. We know the causes and we also know there is a lot of help out there. Can we now actually enforce laws and tackle violent crime with something tougher than harsh words and restorative justice?

I'm perfectly fine with putting away violent criminals, but if we don't address the root cause of the whys and hows, then taxpayers will just end up footing the bill to build more prisons and house more people.

Do you know how much it costs to house a prisoner? The average cost is about $40k/year. Studies have shown that universal prek can help a low income child

Yes, a lot of kids turn to crime for the reasons you mentioned. The question is: what can a city do to turn that around.

Prison is indeed expensive, but you have to think $40k compared to what? If putting a killer behind bars prevents the murder of yet another innocent victim, 40k to save a life is actually kinda cheap.
