When do we learn teacher assignment?

Anonymous wrote:Our ES doesn't inform the parents before the open house. You have to go to the cafeteria and get a card from one of the aides with your kid's assignment for the year. The open house only lasts 45 minutes or so so it's really pretty chaotic because of the long lines and parents/kids trying to get the card so they can meet the teacher before time runs out.

I have no idea why our school does this, but it's pretty much the worst.

Let me guess - McLean or Great Falls?

I'm not the PP, but our school does this in Springfield - but it's 90 minutes.

They do it so there is no time for the parents to complain.

Our school said Aug 16 for teacher notification email, Aug 18 for "teacher walk" (when teacher comes by house), and Aug 19 for open house.

Do you go to one of the small schools with only 2 classes per grade that serves one large neighborhood? I can't even imagine our school doing this.

Basically, yes. More classes in the upper grades because of AAP Center, but I think the biggest grade has only four or five. It's nice to be in a smaller school (around 700 students), but we feed into a huge high school.

Our ES has a “goal” of the 12th

Everyone is saying the 12th or 15th but in reality you'll find out the Thursday before school starts.

Umm, no. My child's teacher will come by the house for the "welcome walk" on Monday, August 15.

Is it not on SIS that day? I thought everything had to be in SIS on the 18th?

Our ES puts the class lists on the front door the Friday before school starts, which is the same day as back to school.

Wow, lining up for an index card? Thats the worst system I have ever heard of.

Parents can just check SIS, If you don’t approve of that method.

Teacher walk plus open house? When do they prepare for class?

I’m a teacher who does a welcome walk. I have no complaints—it’s really fun. We have all of Wednesday with no meetings and have nothing scheduled after the open house on Friday morning. And unless you’re on a specific committee or sped team, there are no meetings on Monday (except a big morning meeting). I’ve never had a problem getting my room ready. Same for my teammates.

I have literally never heard of or experienced a teacher coming to the house. I’ve occasionally run into some at the local pool, but that is purely happenstance.

I think there are a lot of people on here posting from 2015. It is always posted in SIS, and has been for at least the past two years (maybe three).

I think a lot of the smaller schools and schools with a large low-income population do this.

I’ve been teaching in FCPS for over a decade and always thought the teacher walk (even though I was never required to do it) was INSANE; but last year, when my students were paused, I went to each of their houses to drop-off work/notes for them to complete/review. Some of these houses I visited more than once. I actually really enjoyed it and the kids were always happy to see me (even if from a window). It can be rewarding.
