When do we learn teacher assignment?

I think it varies based on where that school is in filling positions. Our school had some vacancies to fill but sent out a note mid-July stating that they were fully staffed, so they are prepared to notify us earlier. There are probably a few schools that have a couple of positions left to fill.

Teacher walk plus open house? When do they prepare for class?

I’m a teacher who does a welcome walk. I have no complaints—it’s really fun. We have all of Wednesday with no meetings and have nothing scheduled after the open house on Friday morning. And unless you’re on a specific committee or sped team, there are no meetings on Monday (except a big morning meeting). I’ve never had a problem getting my room ready. Same for my teammates.

I have literally never heard of or experienced a teacher coming to the house. I’ve occasionally run into some at the local pool, but that is purely happenstance.

I’ve been teaching in FCPS for over a decade and always thought the teacher walk (even though I was never required to do it) was INSANE; but last year, when my students were paused, I went to each of their houses to drop-off work/notes for them to complete/review. Some of these houses I visited more than once. I actually really enjoyed it and the kids were always happy to see me (even if from a window). It can be rewarding.

Don't get me wrong - I think it's a lovely idea, especially if the teacher finds it rewarding. I didn't know if it was mandated by the school or just something you opted to do. I would love for my son's teacher to visit. We got a call two years ago when school started from his teacher, which was nice as well.

I posted the above - got nervous and reached out to the school... Their plan is to post in SIS THAT MORNING.

I cannot believe the poor planning -- these kids are getting on a bus at 730am and won't have their schedule in hand until that morning? What a shit show that open house is going to be with 700+ kids trying to figure out how to get from one place to another.

At least if we had the schedule the day before, we could pull out the school map and look through where they are going.

Wow, calm down. Getting the schedule the morning of is totally fine and, I believe, how it is usually done. You cannot “pull the school map.” They don’t make easily available because of safety issue. You may know someone who kept a paper copy from previous years but it’s not on the website or anything.

Trying to keep it calm for my kid, as I have major anxiety about this -I’m almost 50 and still have dreams (like last week) that I have my schedule but cannot find my clases, or cannot even find my schedule. Last week I dreamed I had my schedule and I was in college - I couldn’t find my math class but someone said it was over by the stadium and I kept walking and stopping to ask people how to get there and finally someone told me I’d have to go back to where I started and drive there bc I’d never make it on time walking. Woke up in a cold sweat. Or I’ll dream about getting on the wrong bus and not being able to figure out where my stop is.

I’m in planning and risk management for a living. So yeah. I’m freaking out about just handing my kid a schedule at 7am and sending him in blind with no time to process even what electives he got!

Why they cannot at least post it the night before is just beyond me. It’s definitely NOT how it worked three years ago when my oldest started there. In fact, they had the family open house first. So we could go in on our own schedule, walk the halls, peek into classrooms, get a lay of the land. It was then the next day that the kids were picked up at their elementary schools, and bussed over to actually walk their schedules with a time limit, simulating the school day.

Really though why does it matter what his schedule is? He'll be in school. He'll manage. Kids are adaptable.

I’m an ES teacher and I don’t see my list in Schoology or SIS. They are still moving staff around though, so I’m not surprised.

OP is not "drowning" and her kid, who's in the same exact situation as every other kid at the school, will be just fine.
