OP stop cruising in the left lane. You should have been paying attention to your mirrors and notice that someone faster was approaching, giving you opportunity to move over. I don't flash my lights at people, but you should have been aware of his presence before he had the opportunity to do so. Pay attention to your surroundings. Check your mirrors constantly. Slower traffic keep right.

yeah so sure OP is at fault, and not the driver who tailgated at 80MPH and then passed her on the shoulder! GTFO.

The rule is not "10 miles over keep left" it's "slower traffic keep right" - ie, it's relative.

I'd like an explanation from OP on how it was possible for the other driver to go 80mph in the left lane, while it was heavy traffic (basically bumper to bumper) on the right.

More than likely, OP wasn't checking her mirrors and paying attention to someone approaching, and thus wasn't looking for opportunities to move over. And it wasn't that heavily trafficked on the right.

MD does not have a left lane law.

In any event, it’s obviously not the “rule” that the left lane belongs to whoever speeds the fastest. The fact that this driver pulled such an unsafe maneuver passing on the shoulder shows they were the problem, not OP.

What are you talking about??

MD drivers still haven't figured out that the left lane is for passing.

So in your case you were there so driver passed you on the shoulder (not safe but another MD driver) and came back I to left lane. BECAUSE THERE WAS NO ONE IN FRONT OF YOU IN THE LEFT LANE.

Or the driver passed you on the left and couldn't get back into the left lane because there were other MD drivers making a turtle parade in the left lane.

Just stay right. You can do it. Promise.

The left lane is for driving at a safe rate of speed. It’s not a “passing lane.”

Yes it is. You should never drive in the left lane. Drive in lane 2 and if you approach a car, pass it in the left lane. Driving in the left lane is dangerous. It forces people to pass you in the right which is the reason for most high speed accidents.

Stop driving in the left lane.

This is absurd. The left lane is a traffic lane that holds a significant amount of volume. It’s not “for passing” - it’s for the faster traffic. And it’s also not for “driving up on anyone as fast as you want then passing on the shoulder.” The problem with the left lane is people going unexpectedly below the speed limit; not people (like OP) driving at an appropriate rate.

It is a common, unwritten rule pretty much everywhere.

This post is like a prime example of why Maryland drivers have the bad reputation that they do. They either have a death wish like the other driver, or they're clueless, unaware drivers like OP.

The bolded is true. It's relative. See someone faster approaching? Move over. But OP wasn't paying attention.

OP's appropriate rate wasn't appropriate. Just move over. If OP had enough time to see someone coming up flashing lights then there was enough time to change lanes. We all know there was room to move over. OP just didn't want too. Not totally to blame but just move over if you see a car approaching fast behind. It could have been an unmarked cop for all OP knew. But instead just sat there in the left lane.

Anonymous wrote:I suppose you can call the non-emergency number, but there isn’t much the police can do. MCPD is short staffed. One district that should have 140 officers is down 40 right now. There also aren’t a lot of people applying to the academy, so this problem will get worse.

Officers also can’t pursue in Montgomery County, so somebody intent on speeding only has to continue driving.

I guess my suggestion would be to reach out to Elrich and the County Council. Their policies contributed to this.

Montgomery county does not police the ICC genius

You are correct. MDTA takes care of the ICC… merely 2 officers at once for all 17 miles. But more importantly, the OP mentioned multiple instances, not just the one on the ICC.

I do thank you for the compliment about my cognitive abilities.

OP: I’m sorry for the harsh responses on this thread. It’s DCUM doing what it does best. You are correct in that driving in the region is getting worse.

NP -You have to drive in the left lane to merge from 370 to 270S, and there are blind curves. Sorry, but I will be driving under 70 mph in the left lane sometimes.

There are cars that ravce on 270. Usually it's at night but I recognize the cars during the day. Was it a souped up Honda with strips and a huge spoiler? I get out of the way of those cars bc they weave in and out of traffic including onto the shoulder.

Stop with the Maryland driver hate. It has been proven that Maryland drivers are not the worst so get off your soap box. pp is right and sometimes one has to travel in the left lane. You don't own it pp

This is interesting. I’ve never understood all the hate for Maryland drivers but it seems like their traffic laws might be different from the norm? Like left lane as a driving lane rather than a passing lane. Also it appears to not be a law in Maryland that when you parallel park on the side of the street, you have to park in the direction your car would be facing if you were driving on that street. When Maryland drivers park facing the wrong way in DC and Virginia, it makes them look like they were drunk when they parked. But I’m guessing it’s just not a law in Maryland?

All of you bashing the OP are clearly not familiar with where the OP was driving. The safest place for through traffic towards the ICC *is* in the left lane due to the other lanes merging in and out of RIO and on and off I-270. She did nothing wrong here, and she is right that the other driver in this instance is a maniac. And it has nothing to do with being in Maryland so just lighten up a little.

10mph over limit left lane is slow. I mean I drive a lot in left lane and I often move to right as I cruise at 80mph. And folks come up on me.

BTW when I was young I was cruising 85 left lane and a guy tailgated me up to 120 mph. I was not getting over. Funny part it was way early in a Sunday so all lanes open.

I “chirped” it at 120 mpg and went into top gear and pulled away and he backed off at 135.

I was in a 17 year old car with 110k miles on odometer so surprised it did not blow up.
