yeah so sure OP is at fault, and not the driver who tailgated at 80MPH and then passed her on the shoulder! GTFO.

The rule is not "10 miles over keep left" it's "slower traffic keep right" - ie, it's relative.

I'd like an explanation from OP on how it was possible for the other driver to go 80mph in the left lane, while it was heavy traffic (basically bumper to bumper) on the right.

More than likely, OP wasn't checking her mirrors and paying attention to someone approaching, and thus wasn't looking for opportunities to move over. And it wasn't that heavily trafficked on the right.

You guys are insane for beating up on the OP. There is never ever any excuse to pass on the shoulder. Is incredibly dangerous and I saw it happen on I 270 in about the same place a couple weeks ago. This can happen to a law abiding driver while they are passing other cars properly and a guy comes zooming up going 90 or 95 and making assumptions about how the traffic will react. And when it doesn’t act like he wants it to he passes on the shoulder. It has nothing to do with the other cars’ behavior or that they are Maryland drivers.

As if Virginia (or dc) drivers don’t cruise in the left lane either. Some of the worst most aggressive and clueless driving I’ve ever seen is on I 66 outside the beltway

Yes it is. You should never drive in the left lane. Drive in lane 2 and if you approach a car, pass it in the left lane. Driving in the left lane is dangerous. It forces people to pass you in the right which is the reason for most high speed accidents.

I was going fast. so I figured he wanted to go 80. This is what a**holes do on the ICC. He wanted to race the green car. Also, the cars in the right lane were going just as fast as me. This is how it goes on the roads in MoCo. Left/right, it really doesn't matter. What matters is he tried to run me off the road or hit the car to the right so he could go 80 and race.

Regarding the ICC moyorcycle crash, does anyone else suspect the police brake checked him? The motorcycle driver must have been going too fast but may have still been alive?

If the car to the right of you are going as fast as you then you should never have been in the left lane.

I'm not condoning his behavior, but your was also not safe.

If the people in the right lane were going as fast as you... THAT IS WHERE YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN. That means it was NOT too heavy for you to move over, and it means you were not paying attention to approaching vehicles. Check your mirrors every other second. Road, rear. Road, side. Road, other side. Road, rear. Etc. Stop zoning out and pay attention to your surroundings.

I agree Maryland drivers Ed should do a better job with this but it’s bizarre that people are madder at about op than the nut who passed on the shoulder 20 mph above speed limit. First, it can definitely happen that a person is using the left lane appropriately (for passing) and then temporarily can’t get right over and yet is rightfully unwilling to go 85 mph. Second, some people truly don’t seem to know the left lane us for passing but wtf, that’s nothing compared to the idiots weaving in and out going far too fast. -worked at shock trauma center
