DC White flight - what will it mean for education?

Meh. Life will go on.

The article says that Montgomery County and Arlington lost white residents too, would you like to speculate about those schools?

Explain to me why a school system should focus primarily upon on one socio-economic and ethnic group. Other jurisdictions like Arlington, Alexandria, MCPS, and Fairfax somehow seem to manage to care about ALL learners.

Because inequality is horrible for society overall, yes even for you.

I'm a European immigrant (but not Anglo) who is disgusted with continuing segregation and imprisonment of a significant portion of the US population. I want my kids to benefit from fair competition where the brightest minds can apply their talents and efforts to better society, not a system that suppresses such talent based on random and inconsequential (to quality) attribute, such as skin color, gender, accent, religion, sexual orientation, to name a few.

Do people really not get it or just pretend not to get it? SMH

Most whites believe that those other groups don’t contain the best or brightest. See how DCUM uses “white” as a proxy for UMC. If you’re really European but not Anglo, then you must be aware of this racism yourself, because it’s rampant in Europe also. Or are you just pretending it doesn’t exist?

DC did not defund the police. Check your facts. People are moving from cities here for the same reasons people are moving all over the country. More space. Schools. To be near family. And yes, crime. But not police funding.

Hello. DC did not defund the police MPD has a half a billion dollar budget, and Murial Bowser asking for more.

Will the scenario of overcrowded WoTP schools pushing out "middle class" families come sooner than threatened by JR feeder parents?

Anyone have anecdotal feedback on white flight in areas EoTP or anywhere in DC?

D.C.'s White population has declined for the first time in two decades

Are you only concerned about white flight?

You are arguing that DCPS should prioritize a single demographic out of equality?! Huh.

I find it telling that this article and your questions focus so intently on white folks when the article also notes "also dropped more precipitously between 2020 and 2021. The city lost 6,689 non-Hispanic Black residents that year, more than three and a half times the number it had lost the previous year." While the city has been losing Black residents for a while now, do people find that decline of equal concern or just white residents?

+1

I read the article and just knew someone was going to create a thread that talked about the "white flight" without mention of the decrease in other demos. I am also greatly enjoying the anecdotal replies saying how many people moved to close in suburbs. Of course, the article makes clear that this white population decline occurred in close in counties as well:

"Many of the region’s close-in suburbs also lost White residents at a much higher rate than previously, including Montgomery County, Md. as well as Fairfax and Arlington counties"

But by all means, DCUM, please proceed and do that DCUM thing you do.

Not the poster to whom you are replying, but your response makes no sense. The usual DCUM crowd fixated on OP's half baked post to illustrate that the oft repeated concerns about DC schools are proved to be correct based on the population decline. Then we got the anecdotal evidence of all the people who moved to Arlington and Montgomery counties for better schools. I think what the poster to whom you replied was pointing out was that the theory doesn't work because the suburbs with "better" schools also saw population declines so that would likely indicate that the main driver for the decline wasn't schools.

Thanks Charles Allen! Just keep shoveling millions to useless violence interrupters. People are voting with their feet.

I realize you asked this flippantly, but, YES!

DC is starving the police department. Bowser desperately wants more money for hiring just to keep the number of police officers at the same level. Meanwhile the DC Council diverts the police money to more violence interrupters instead.

Usually I am on DCUM castigating the casual racism of posters. In this case I am going to argue your virtual signaling blindness is getting in the way of facts. People use "white" as a placeholder for UMC and "black" as a placeholder for FARMs because the DC data supports those as reasonable proxies. I don't think anyone who uses those words that way fails to understand their are FARMs white families and UMC black ones. But in DC there are on the whole very few white FARMs families and the poverty rate amongst black families in DC is very high especially against all other demos.

There's an ongoing battle on Nextdoor about people who send out lookouts for people who committed crimes and describe hat, hair color, shirt, pants, shoes, car and don't mention the race of the person. When people point out the absurdity of failing to describe the only factor that cannot be changed, the woke police argue it is not ok to describe race. (Never mind that by assuming the perpetrator is black they are showing their own bias). I am betting, PP, that you are on the side of people who think it is wrong to cite the race in a post purporting to be a "look out for" post?

TL: DR It isn't racist to say "black" or "white" if the population about which you speak is mostly black or white.

MD and VA are also losing white populations. They both have Republican governors. Not to let the "facts" get in your way or anything.
