Do you tip Lyft/Uber drivers?

Exactly. I thought this was part of the point.

Nooooooo. That was never it. Ever.

You couldn't be more wrong. When the apps first started, they didn't even use private owners. They worked with taxi companies and limo/black car services to offer another way for riders to get quick rides without having to deal with cash which made it safer for taxi drivers and a way for car services to make extra money between scheduled rides. Even when they added in private car owners, uber in particular was adamant that you would never feel the pressure of tipping. And now they've changed that. I absolutely will not tip. I just checked and my Lyft rating is 5.0 and my Uber rating is 4.8.

I'm good.

It definitely was in the beginning; however, Uber and Lyft started screwing over drivers on comp about a year or two ago. I remember reading about it and it was really outrageous so now I tip. The original model was never sustainable and was just burning through PE cash.

But why are we as consumers responsible for paying drivers more than these two companies with a combined valuation of over $70 BILLION? I make little more than $70 thousand (that's thousand with a T). I shall not be tipping rideshare drivers.

Yes, unless something bad happens. Once a Lyft driver made some very unsafe lane changes on 495 for no good reason, and I did not appreciate it at all. Gave a bad review and no tip.

Do you tip or no? What percent?

Just took an Uber today. $31 to go 20 miles. He arrived to pick me up in 3 minutes. He didn’t chat with me at all. I was fresh from visiting loved one at bedside. Tipped 20% mostly for the not talking thing.

Unless they are horrible drivers or their car stinks really bad, I always tip.

Yes and I try to pay it in cash

The Uber model was never sustainable. It was all a scam to destroy the taxi industry, subvert regulation, and line the pockets of investors. It was never meant to give a better life to the drivers, more pay to the drivers, or remove the need for tipping.

Absolutely.

Always.

And yet they're still losing billions a year. Thank god for options and not having to be hostage to the legacy industry, but I doubt if Lyft or Uber gonna be in business for long unless they start showing some profit.

Gosh, you sound like a lovely person. Someone provides you with a good/safe service, and you refuse to give them a few dollars.

Seriously. This sounds like the person who also refuses to tip servers, "because they should be paid more." Um, okay? All you're doing is stiffing the person who's helping you. You're not disrupting the system, dude. And stiffing them under the guise of being on their side is truly cynical.

Never ever. I hate tipping culture. No one should have to rely on tips to eat or provide themselves shelter.

As PP pointed out, you are not disrupting the system. You are just making that person rely on other people's tips instead of yours to provide themselves shelter. Good job jerk.

OP, did you tip taxi drivers in the past?

I thought Uber/Lyft developed as a way to create cash-free transactions for taxi services. Before them, I can't tell you how many DC cabs wouldn't take credit cards (oh, the machine is broken). I need to use my company's credit card to expense items and I would get right back out of those taxis since I wouldn't have cash.

Anyway, yes I always tip unless something egregious happens.
