For those mad about bocce ball

Presumably they bought the court and not just the ball.

If you play bocce indoors, on a smooth surface like a gym floor, you need to purchase a court made of pvc pipes. Since bocce is a winter sport in Montgomery County, they need the indoor kits.

My kids played it in the fall at the beginning of the year. I assumed it was outdoors but never asked.

It was federal money that was meant to help alleviate the negative impact of the Covid pandemic. MCPS used it for bocce instead of using it to hire additional staff or to upgrade buildings or to buy necessary supplies.

It helped alleviate the mental health issues and stress caused by covid. Money well spent!

Keep dreaming. Kids with real mental health issues need treatment, possibly hospitalization, not bocce ball. Or, is this your made up mental health claims from kids who have checked out parents who expect the schools to be the primary parents.

It's not okay to dismiss some disabled children because you don't feel their problems are severe enough. The county did a good thing investing in sports that all children can participate in.

We have a $3 billion budget. We can afford it.

Not when some schools need major repairs, we don’t have adequate staffing nor basics like books.

Then pay for it from the budget and don’t use funds designated for COVID relief.

If they included the bocce ball among the many items they listed in the grant application, and then the application was approved and the grant money received, then it isn't an inappropriate use of funds. You may not agree with the reasoning behind it, but there's no evidence of malfeasance here, no matter how many threads you start.

I am the person who posted that. I agree 100%. I am a big bocce fan. I just wanted to clarify in case someone comes back and says “if it cost $30 how come my school spent $500 on bocce?”

Given the schools aren't using it all the time for PE class, schools could also share sets.

The kids thought it was so much fun! It was definitely money well spent if you value improving student morale and mental health.

I wish MCPS would put more funding into hiring special education teachers and compensatory services over any school sports program.
