It was geographically closer than the Blake zone is today, and makes even more sense from a continuity of boundaries and proximity to school(s) perspective.

Also, it was made as a redneck farm town where Congressmen could have a respite from DC. These should be all the details you need to know about Sherwood/Olney. Think Bethesda/CC but on the East side - cuckoo. If Olney is my final option, I'd much rather send my kids to Howard County.

Show us on the doll where Olney hurt you

Facts are facts, buddy. I can show you the articles where Einstein kids were subjected to extremely racist and hurtful comments during a run-of-the-mill sporting event, though.

Agreed, DC told me how one of the Sherwood girls soccer members called their friend the n word. Disgusting school match with disgusting parents.

I’ll take “things that never happened” for $400, Alex.

None of this is true except your last sentence.

There was more to the story (really less) than what was published in the media. A lot of the story was fabricated and embellished.

I still see the redneck vibe and wholeheartedly stand by my comment.

Tonight, rabid DCUM user who has never been to Olney cries loudly. More at ten.

Tonight at 11: my sources come from a family member who works at the Brooke Grove nursing home and has had many experiences in the town of Olney. Moving on from the troll, at least the HS has the current county teacher of the year, so at least that's a positive there.

In other words, you don’t have any first-hand experience. I’m a poc living in Olney for 30+ years and I’ve never had a negative or even borderline racist experience here, and neither have any of my other POC friends and family.

I find all need to be diverse, inclusive and a very good place to raise a family.

Well you were lucky. I lived in Olney from the 70's through the early 90's and was called the n word numerous times by strangers and in school. I am in my 50's now and can remember each incident vividly. I will say it was a safe neighborhood and overall I had good experiences growing up there. My parents did a good job instilling a sense of self in me so I never took the racial slurs or slights to heart.

My experiences at Sherwood were positive growing up, and my own children have had very positive experiences. There were a couple of events last year but they were addressed and I believe they were isolated to those people. I also think those incidents are not isolated throughout high schools in Montgomery county with big mouth kids we think spewing racist words is OK. You’ll find it at every school from Einstein to Whitman.

Where do you live now? Olney isn’t that way now. My biracial kids have never had anything racist come their way.

The Rosa Parks principal is an absolute gem, though. Maybe she'll take over at Sherwood in a few years because she deserves an opportunity to move up.

What did he do that was sketchy?

Whether we wanna admit it or not, and whether it makes us comfortable or uncomfortable, the sins of racism and de-facto segregation live on to this day, and students are suffering as a result of it (be it social capital to move through certain spaces, exposure to wealth-generating careers, the feeling that "XYZ program is only for kids on the West Side"). Data speaks VOLUMES. Have a wonderful day.

Very uncomfortable interactions with young women (they came to me multiple times). Off-hand biased/racist comments. Treated me differently from others when I'm just doing my job on student council - for example, avoiding me in the hallway and avoiding me when I requested meetings.

Fabricated? Racist slurs are racist slurs and shouldn't be accepted. If it were fabricated, why did the students testify to the BOE?

OP, there is the wrong place to ask about Sherwood. There is a ton of Olney hatred on this site from white UMC people sheltered in W schools who believe that Olney is filled with racist white trash people who cannot afford a W school. I have lived in the Olney/Brookeville area for 12 years and my kids go to the Sherwood cluster. They are building $700k townhomes and $1m+ SFHs here. My neighbors are CPAs, Ph.D.'s, J.D.'s, to name a few. I do not know Trumpers. A school that is less than 50% white is not predominantly white. Yes, it is not as diverse as MCPS as a whole, but there is not as much poverty here in Olney. Funny how I rarely see threads saying the W school parents/kids are racist when their schools are far less diverse than Olney.

Everyone knows that there are ton of racist parents and kids at the W schools. That is a given.

Just because the population is less than 50% White doesn't mean that White mainstream culture isn't predominant at the school, or that White experiences are usually centered to the detriment of children who are disabled, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, lower-income, etc. Believe me, White UMC people aren't hating on your town - this poster has lived in East County all his life. That's a problem with this toxic thread, everyone from every other cluster is "hating on you". Just because someone is a professional doesn't mean that they are incapable of hiding their true hateful values. What we're trying to say is that Olney has that negative Country Club vibe for anyone who knows exactly what I mean. Not exactly a rocket science concept here.
