Sherwood High School

Their current principal is sketchy as well (I was on student leadership at a previous high school where he concurrently served, and worked directly with him as the class administrator). The Rosa Parks principal is an absolute gem, though. Maybe she'll take over at Sherwood in a few years because she deserves an opportunity to move up.

I still see the redneck vibe and wholeheartedly stand by my comment.

Tonight, rabid DCUM user who has never been to Olney cries loudly. More at ten.

Tonight at 11: my sources come from a family member who works at the Brooke Grove nursing home and has had many experiences in the town of Olney. Moving on from the troll, at least the HS has the current county teacher of the year, so at least that's a positive there.

Again, if it were me, I'd send my kid to a Howard County school such as Wilde Lake, Atholton, etc. or a MoCo school such as Blake, Rockville, etc.

^ Dare I add Paint Branch to the list as well.

Sounds like it’s a done deal. I wouldnt choose Sherwood for my kids either but that is where OP finds themselves. Hopefully we’ve shared enough information so that OP prepares their child not to be part of the problem - presuming that OP cares about racism.

Very much so. Very tight knit and "All-American". Think QO on steroids.

Yes, there's a positive in all of that but I lived in Olney/Brookeville for 20+ years and there's definitely a redneck/Trump vibe.

In other words, you don’t have any first-hand experience. I’m a poc living in Olney for 30+ years and I’ve never had a negative or even borderline racist experience here, and neither have any of my other POC friends and family.

I find all need to be diverse, inclusive and a very good place to raise a family.

My experiences at Sherwood were positive growing up, and my own children have had very positive experiences. There were a couple of events last year but they were addressed and I believe they were isolated to those people. I also think those incidents are not isolated throughout high schools in Montgomery county with big mouth kids we think spewing racist words is OK. You’ll find it at every school from Einstein to Whitman.

I can't speak to Sherwood specifically because my kids are not in high school yet, but I can speak to living in Olney/Brookeville. The community out here is very family oriented and it feels extremely safe. I grew up in Silver Spring where leaving your bikes in your garage let alone your lawn would be almost a guarantee to get them stolen (we had ours stolen TWICE). I like living somewhere that my kids can leave their bikes on our lawn for DAYS and they are still there. The parents may be over the top, but I think that's because they are SO involved in their kids lives and in the schools. I think that is only a good thing. I have seen a lot more diversity in the past 10 years and I think that will only increase going forward. I think the main complaint about living out here is how far it is from DC or Baltimore. We very much miss good restaurants, but the older our kids get and the more embedded we are in the community, that isn't as important to us anymore. It really is overall a wonderful place to raise your kids. I also LOVE living so close to more of a "country" vibe and getting my kids out into nature more.

Well you were lucky. I lived in Olney from the 70's through the early 90's and was called the n word numerous times by strangers and in school. I am in my 50's now and can remember each incident vividly. I will say it was a safe neighborhood and overall I had good experiences growing up there. My parents did a good job instilling a sense of self in me so I never took the racial slurs or slights to heart.

As a parent of a current student all I can say is Sherwood is a run of the mill High School in Montgomery County. My child has had some good teachers and some teachers where you as a parent might want to intervene because the child is frustrated with the teacher with no resolve. Course selections are limited due to families sticking with the norms; so only a few languages, STEM offerings which is sad. If your child is into sports, they will fit right in.

The statement about parents being over the top is true, but if you are in this cluster you have probably already seen the overabundance of needing to one up your neighbor syndrome. But this happens all over not just in Olney!
