Sherwood High School

My child will be attending Sherwood Hight school as a freshman next school year. Can anyone tell ma about their experience with the school. From what i've read, it seems like a decent school but would love to get some thoughts...

There have been some racist incidents. The impression my kids have is that it is very white. They have a good theater program.

DCUM: It's not a "W" or Blair, so it's probably ganglandia.

I thought Sherwood has a very good reputation among MCPS high schools?

Didn’t make the top 50 in MD.

I went there in the 80’s so I’m sure it’s not the same. To me, it always had the reputation of being one of lower tier high schools in the county. I’m a POC and came across racism on a daily basis. Confederate flag clothing, license plates, etc. There were a few good teachers but most were just okay. I did fine there and as with anything, you can find your niche and make the best of it. It’s not the worst but if you can do better go to a private or purchase in a different school cluster.

In the late 1990s when the Northeast Consortium was being made, Sherwood parents vehemently protested to be excluded from it because they believed that lower-income, BIPOC children from Paint Branch and Springbrook would "negatively influence their (precious) kids" when people just wanted equal access to magnet and all that comes with it, not to bother anyone or be villainized. It was geographically closer than the Blake zone is today, and makes even more sense from a continuity of boundaries and proximity to school(s) perspective.

Also, it was made as a redneck farm town where Congressmen could have a respite from DC. These should be all the details you need to know about Sherwood/Olney. Think Bethesda/CC but on the East side - cuckoo. If Olney is my final option, I'd much rather send my kids to Howard County.

I live in Olney and see much less of the good ol' boy, redneck vibe over the last 10 years as younger, mostly professional families move in and older folks leave.

it's mostly white and interestingly enough, ranked lower than mostly black paint branch and blake.
my dd played against them for field hockey and the parents are over the top. you would have thought it was the superbowl.

Facts are facts, buddy. I can show you the articles where Einstein kids were subjected to extremely racist and hurtful comments during a run-of-the-mill sporting event, though.

I still see the redneck vibe and wholeheartedly stand by my comment.

They're very annoying indeed. OK, Dan and Jane, congrats on getting a 5 bedroom split level with acres of farmland for $600K. Wow, you must be soooo proud of yourself.

Three racist events involving Sherwood publicized already this year alone. Tells you what you need to know. Racism is not gone from that school.
