US News rankings are out with individual magnet program rankings as well

How did RMIB do?

quote from article:

U.S. News also ranks magnet programs across the country. MCPS schools’ magnet programs rankings are:

• Poolesville: 58
• Richard Montgomery: 96
• Northwest: 111
• Montgomery Blair: 173
• Wheaton: 202
• Rockville: 212
• Clarksburg: 213
• Springbrook: 227
• Col. Zadok Magruder: 276
• Albert Einstein: 290
• Northwood: 316
• Gaithersburg: 378
• John F. Kennedy: 394
• Seneca Valley: 454
• Watkins Mill: 470

MCPS’ magnet programs specialize in areas ranging from communications to biomedicine.

What magnet program does NWHS have? I know the other ones have regional IB, but I what does NW have?

the list specifically looks at magnet, too, but I'm thinking CAP is included in Blair.

In any case, your statement of the magnet inflating test scores is like saying the rich kids in Whitman are inflating their test scores.

Yes it may reflect wealth that may allow tutors and other supplements, but doesn’t that reflect an overall higher readiness among students in those schools? And isn’t that an appropriate measure?

Sure but by that account who cares. Is it more impressive for a school to rank near the top where students have every advantage such that a 98% graduation rate should be expected vs a school with a mix of socioeconomic levels that achieved a 86% graduation rate?

The question is which school is actually better at teaching and engaging students, not what type of family/fiance dynamic sets up kids up for greater success.

Not really. The students you mention at Whitman are not part of a magnet program and so are not inflating test scores at their school.

The students who are at Blair and RM because of their magnet programs will have higher test scores, which raises the test scores for the school overall. Someone looking at the rankings might wrongly assume that the students in the schools' non-magnet programs are high as well.

It would be nice if US News provided separate numbers for the schools' non-magnet programs.

Why do they just list the rank? These lists are kind of stupid anyway but without the context of how many programs are being ranked in total the individual ranks are totally meaningless.

Why would CAP program be dragging the Blair numbers down?

The kids who go to the school are part of the school. The rich kids at Whitman inflate the scores inasmuch as the magnet kids at Blair inflate the scores.

The Whitman students would be at Whitman regardless, unlike the magnet students at RM and Blair.

newsflash: non magnet students at RM and Blair take AP classes and exams, too, and for RM, they can also take IB classes.

Also, in cluster RM students can join the IB diploma program in 11th grade, but not be in the magnet program, which starts in 9th grade.

Not sure how that's a "newsflash." Students at most high schools take AP classes and exams.

Students at criteria-based magnet programs will have higher scores. So we do not know how the school ranks without the magnet. Those students who are just taking IB classes but who are not part of the magnet would be considered non-magnet, not sure where the confusion there would be.

Meaning Whitman is the school the students are zoned for, so those students would be at Whitman regardless of any magnet program.

New to me at least was a ranking of MD magnet programs with Poolesville snagging the top spot with Blair’s program only taking 4th out of the regional programs, I wonder if the CAP program watered down Blair’s results?

Between RM and Blair magnet is northwest magnet. What is northwest magnet about? Anyone?

Northwest has a Middle College program that students can apply to, just like Northwood does:

the kids at Whitman are there mostly because their parents can afford to. High SES schools generally have high scores. Magnet students wouldn't be there if they didn't have the smarts to be there.
